WizardOfAtlantis
It would certainly be a more interesting world if there was actual accountability for certain groups of people.
lukertin
Let's encourage Canadian officials to violate international law by arresting a citizen of another country who has not conspired to, or actively tortured citizens of Canada! What a grand idea
Ghogiel
UN convention against torture, there is a legal case that there are authorities that can actually take him into custody for the crimes, under universal jurisdiction. diplomatic immunity only applies while in office. Ghogiel
Someone didn't get the memo. There are reasons why every country who participated in the War and now sits on the UN or the UNSC, have all ratified this particular treaty. At the least, if the US didn't want to recognise international law, have human rights, or be held accountable for violating them, they shouldn't have agreed to it. I know they have tried pressing many countries into a special treaty that prohibits those states from extraditing any US nationals to face international law, but not Canada. The US is probably the main antagonist to making a mockery of international law, protection of human rights and all the people who died in WWII is now reduced to a joke. Didn't everyone decide that something like WWII shouldn't happen again, and if people did commit war crimes or human rights violations they should be called up on it, there is clear convention on the matter. The idea that you find ignoring that funny is disturbing. There is a recognised court room where these trials can take place, what is funny though is he'll get a trial. juderodney
There is a recognised court room where these trials can take place... If you're referring to the International Criminal Court at the Hague, the U.S. never ratified the Rome Statute. That means the court has no legal standing to try any U.S. citizen. Arthmoor
diplomatic immunity only applies while in office. And since the alledged action took place while he was in office, diplomatic immunity would have protected it. Nevermind that no "torture" ever took place. The definition of the term seems to have lost its meaning mysteriously after Bush took office. If you're referring to the International Criminal Court at the Hague, the U.S. never ratified the Rome Statute. That means the court has no legal standing to try any U.S. citizen. As it should be. The US is a sovereign nation that has no obligation to answer to a non-existent "world authority". Neither does any other sovereign nation.
