After seeing Skyrim screenshots

In new vegas there are barely any shadows or dynamic lighting, like the only shadows that appear are the ones from your character or your companions and NPCs, buildings/rocks/etc... never cast a shadow and that Skyrim looks so much cooler due to that...

That's because New Vegas, Fallout 3 and Oblvion do not have dynamic shadows, except for the NPC's. EDIT: I see you already said that, silly me.

Oblivion used to have dynamic shadows, but those were removed due to the Xbox heaving too low specifications.

Dynamic Shadows are actually my favorite graphical improvement in Skyrim, they add a lot to the atmosphere and feel to the world.

True, such a shame oblivion for pc didn´t come with dynamic shadows option.I wonder why nobody did a mod to fix that.Dynamic shadows is one of my favorite features in graphics as well and skyrim looks so much beautifull with it.

I'm not sure if they ever had fully working dynamic shadows .. otherwise the modders would have figured it out .. Ive only seena one attempted at dynamic shadows in oblivion and it wasn't really working for them .. glitches and some objects just didn't cast any shadows at all .. I think Bethesda wanted to do it but they couldn't figure it out in time .. I dont think it was removed .. keep in mind they were a much smaller team back then.

There is code for dynamic shadows in the oblivion shader files, apparently experiments with Carmack's reverse and other stuff ect.

And more to the point lets not forget the E3 demos of oblivion before release actually showing it on a lot more than just actors.

Todd Howard "true dynamic soft shadows. you can even see the shadows cast though this rib cage here. "

Yes but only indoors and only in a small handful of scenes .. I still have yet to see any modders get it to work so that makes me think bethesda just never got it fully running. *shrugs* .. I could be wrong for sure.. Its just what I think happened... and explains why it wasn't released as a PC option.

They did get it workings. It's not likey they didn't have any shadows, nothing suggests that they couldn't getting it working... working on the hardware without it melting is another matter. I remember Todd talking about frying the (amazing) PC they did the demos on in the anniversary podcast.

When oblvion was released you needed a high end GFX card to get it even near to maxed out, probably they just disabled it becuase it was too intensive not becuase it didn't work, left all the junk code in there for all to see. Plus when ever did the PC version of Ob get any special treatment? It's one of the biggest crits you can make about the game. It's like saying they couldn't get native joypad support working correctly so they didn't bother. But in reality they likely could have gotten it working, it's just they just didn't bother for the PC.
