Valamyr
Whilst Im ok with Skyrim being only 6gb, PLEASE guys quit repeating that horrible 'Compression' excuse. Its PR talk at its worst. :wallbash: Compression technology is old and reached it's peak QUITE awhile ago. There are simple limitations why compression doesn't scale up indefinitely, and these were pretty much all run into before the dot.com burst, which is why we've all been using the same compression tools since. Bethesda have NOT, have DEFINITELY NOT made any strides in that department. The game is 6gb because the texture resolution had to be kept lower than what's available on most recent PC games, primarily because it's a title developed with the Xbox 360 in mind first and foremost, and they only had so many resources to pour into the PC port. Textures are what takes the bulk of the space on your average modern game, unless it's packed with videos, which is not that case with Skyrim (another space saver) Skyrim will use BSAs, which is also notably what's been used for their previous titles. It's good, but it's the same as we had for Oblivion or Fallout 3. I'm all for the occasional bout of marketing BS to grease the wheels, but as an IT professional, seeing so many people repeat this particular one about compression is graying my heir at an alarming rate. I'm too young to look old :verymad: Edited October 29, 2011 by Valamyr

But then again I've built my own powerful systems for the past 11 years. Not sure why people always gripe about it.

I don't play games on my pc tho. (Well except morrowind) and i have played oblivion & fallout3 & FNV.And i have never had BIG problems with em before, sure ive seen my fair share of bugs but i deal with it and i go on enjoying the game.Im not the kinda guy who toils over every little thing (Frame rate & Screen tear's ect.) Bethesda would not release a broken game.Least of all one thats been 4 years in the making. Do people seriously think this? It comes out in a few days and i can't wait to get my hands on it.Ime sure i will not be dissapointed on the morning of 11.11.11. :woot:
ajrunke
Rage was a 25 GB game and it was mediocre at best. That campaign lasted only 15 hours if you played it slowly like I did. (I do wish it wasn't compressed so much for the PC...it's a shame to downsample beautiful art when PCs are capable of running it - but such is the nature of multiple platform development)

About a 50 percent compression was achieved to a standard .7z format file. BSA files as were done in Fallout 3 and FNV are very much compressible. Least that one was. Now I can't say what they have done for Skyrim, neither can you. WE have yet to see the BSA files, etc. IT could well be the new ones with THIS gameare compressed far more than in the past. To say there was no room for improvement in that department is absurd as there clearly is room. I used 7zip with default settings.

I used 7zip with default settings.correct me if I am wrong, but they could have compressed the BSAs more.. but wouldn't it have to be decompressed at run time. I'm not entirely certain what kinda of performance impact you would have doing that. but I am assuming something ram related. on the PC apparently uncompressed BSAs are faster and offer the best performance...I don't think it is a straight forward case of compressing the crap out everything I am for the record doubting that the BSAs, are actually going to be compressed a whole lot more than F3 ones were. perhaps somewhat more, we'll find out pretty soon anyway.
