Skyrim complete PC crashes

since this thread is a CTD.

actually, the thread was originally about fill system crashes that required a hard reset. people still continue to post CTD issues even after we stated it wasn't a CTD thread.

My apologies on the CTD comment, I corrected that comment. I stand corrected and meant the black screen of death, no signal, and hard reset required. Thanks

Nothing I can say that hasn't been already said (so you may save your time reading my ramblings - I warned), but the issue, whatever it is, makes both - ATI (AMD) and NVIDIA drivers go unresponsive. Speaking for myself, my computer is definitely not overheating when system-wide freeze (lockup) occurs. As I understand, ATI users have screen going black, while NVIDIA users are left with a frozen image on the screen? Well, I doubt the issue is gonna be fixed in the drivers then.

What troubles me, is that Bethesda didn't release a hotfix for the issue... It's been two months since game launch (and I had this problem from the start), and they're still not fixing it. Probably means we may not expect a patch any time soon. Nor any modifications that would address the problem, it clearly seems to be in the game code.

I would suggest banging on the door asking for their comments on this particular issue. Yeah, I know, I doubt they'd give any comments, but would be good to try and at least know what the hell is going on, and more importantly - whether they're working on a fix.

P.S. I see even the creator of ENBSeries patch doesn't address the problem. Which confirms my suspicion that the error is somewhere very deep in game code and is not something people (other than Bethesda) can fix. Damn.

Why is it my PC has Win7 and can run EVERY game perfectly fine, though everyone else has problems?

Either way, it seems that people have cracked those problems I was going to bring up. That means:

I seriously haven't got a clue.

If you ask me, it's either sound, video, or launcher...

after months of reading peoples symptoms and differing sys specs that all end in the same black screen i put my chips on the game code trying to use high level functions improperly on the graphics front.

reasons being, its mainly high spec systems copping it,majority being AMD side, but also with high end nvidia with a smattering of realtek/amd hd audio.

for example i cured it by simply removing the 6870 iceq and installing a cheap nvidia 520 and never had another black screen, changed nothing in the bios or OS and a cheapo card just solved it.

but i still want to get working on the CK when released but theres no point putting any work into the modding until this major problem is fixed.

also is a huge problem for other games,if i have to keep swapping out cards for extra eye candy.

[ps..installing both 6870 and nvidia and trying to use one for each game doesnt work, whatever calls coming from the game to the system sees the amd card and dumps to no signal siezures.]

so when or if they finally hunt it down i put my bets on the high call functions of the graphics side.

Perhaps you missed my post here http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/456889-skyrim-complete-pc-crashes/page__view__findpost__p__4261435 but I can use my 6870 without installing my 4870. You just need to lower the clock speeds. I did not even change my driver....all I did was change cards. BUT lowering the clock speeds works great for me.

firstly sorry for snappy response a while back, mistook you for one of the nastys ;)

as you did i also tried lowering clock settings as the iceq 6870 has a rp for a bad stock oc,but all it did was improve the game a little for a few hours then it returned to crashing.

as a point of interest,i also owned [well owned] a 4870 iceq as well, but when i swapped the 6870 out and returned the 4870 it lasted about 3 hours and then the actual card fried itself,at low temps and low voltage.

wether the game fried it or it was the end of its lifespan i dont know,no way of telling, was wondering if you get similiar errors appearing on your 4870,[ie:system startup graphic errors and win 7/win xp failing to boot it correctly ?,which were the signs of imminent death]

strangely though this is when the black screen siezures migrated to my other games.

Hi all. I've tried everything to fix my crashing:

*Updated Skyrim, Direct-X, Sound drivers and my graphics card drivers.

*Tried the 4GB mod and after a while that started to fail aswell.

*I've reinstalled my game and all my mods and yet it doesn't stop crashing.

*Lowered my graphics settings to the lowest settings and it stil crashes.

*Lowering the sound Hz doesn't help either.

My PC specs:

Nvidia Geforece ENGTX275

Core 2 Duo E7600 3.06Ghz

4GB RAM

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

I think this crashing problem has nothing to do with any of the current rumored problems (drivers, steam, direct x, failing hardware, sound, etc). It is a problem with Skyrim and save files over 15 - 20MB. Skyrim will not, due to a coding error, read or save a save file over 20Mb properly. This problem is completely on Bethesda.

This being said, the more you play, the bigger the save file gets and the worse your problems start to get. Your problems starts small and your crashes only happens once in about an hour or two... So the save gets bigger and bigger, sometimes you start too see purple people and textures and the crashes get more until it's unplayable. This is what happend to me and I've heard of a lot of other people that this is happening too aswell.

We need a fix to this problem! Bethesda really screwed this up!

I'm gonna start by saying I am a complete noob when it comes to PC gaming and computers in general.

I've had this new tower for not even 2 days yet. I figured I'd pick up Skyrim so I could enjoy all the mods. I've put in maybe 4 hours and have had this black screen crash like 6 times. Generally within 5-30 min of gameplay. Started on ultra setting and everything looked amazing compared to PS3. I had no noticable FPS drops. Turned the settings down and still had the issue. One time after having to hard reset it the black screen happened during the start up. Now it's happened twice outside the game. Once on youtube and another time browsing a forum. Anyone have this happen outside Skyrim? Updated the driver and it hasn't happened outside the game in the last hour. Haven't tried Skyrim.

I've read a decent portion of this thread and honestly most of the spec stuff and tweeks to try go over my head. Like I said, noob here. I'm mostly concerned about it happening outside the game now.

Processor: AMD FX-8120 CPU (8x 3.10GHz/8MB L2 Cache)

Processor Cooling: Liquid CPU Cooling System [AMD] 120mm Fan

Memory: 8 GB [2 GB X4] DDR3-1600 Memory Module

Video Card: AMD Radeon HD 6950 - 2GB - Single Card

Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 -- AMD 970

Hard Drive: 1 TB HARD DRIVE -- 32M Cache, 7200 RPM, 6.0Gb/s - Single Drive

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium

Right now it sounds like speculation as to the actual cause. Mostly overheating? Anyway, if there are any detailed, fool proof steps for an idiot like me to try I'd really appreciate any help. I'm just concerned the hard resetting could have damaged my brand new tower. That's what warranty is for I guess. :/

yes..it migrated to my other games and other software, like 3dsmax,furmark and CCC [ati].

beware though,as when it started happening at boot it was a sign my card was either dying or being murdered. [ati 4 4870 iceq]
