Since I got Skyrim in November I haven't had any problems. Now, since a few days ago I get constant crashes making it unplayable. Game runs better then normal right up until it locks up and I have to Ctrl-Alt-delete my way out. The music keeps playing but the game is frozen. Mainly when I'm going into a cave or building, and once it locks up I can never enter that area again. :wallbash: Pretty much done with Bethesda. Played Fallout: New Vegas until it just fell to pieces and locked up every ten seconds.

Hi guys,

I've been having the problems listed here: game randomly crashes, screen goes blank, sound carries on for a few seconds and then goes crazy, have to reboot computer, no particular pattern but seems to happen most outside etc etc.

I've been looking through forums trying to find a fix and tried pretty much everything I could, which was getting increasingly infuriating. I've come across a fix though - looks like it won't work for everyone (depending on your system) but I tried this and Skyrim instantly started behaving itself for me.

The link to the instructions is via Youtube:

Please note - the instructions are on the page itself and not on the video - you will need to go to the actual youtube page, scroll down and look at the video description. I put the link in but it is automatically bringing up the video rather than just displaying the web address and I don't know how to turn that off, sorry.

Basically, there is a .dll file I downloaded and put in the Skyrim folder - it fixed everything for me with no need to mess about with hard drive settings/underclocking/graphics cards etc.

This will probably be my only post on this forum but I wanted to spread this in case anyone else finds it useful - hope this helps!

I've discovered a possible fix for the problem, but it will only help if you are using an ATI/AMD video card. It's a simple .dll replacement that seems to have alleviated the problem entirely for me without any ill effects. I'm posting a link to the file, but I don't know exactly how/why it works for me. Megaupload has recently been shut down by our increasingly out-of-touch government, so I reuploaded the file somewhere else. If someone(s) would be kind enough to mirror it and message me the URL, I'll add a link in this video's comments.

The file: http://www.box.com/s/cy7y0qvbyjmgnnr39b7c

The instructions: Replace the "atiumdag.dll" file in the folder "Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim" with the file at this link. (remember to keep a backup). Most users report that there is no atiumdag.dll there in the first place, but that's OK. Just make sure this version of the file is in that directory.

This is from the youtube webpage, I checked that folder on my system and the dll is not there.

Well my experience was pretty much like the OP mentioned, but I was getting random system lockups which forced me to hard reset the laptop by holding down the power button. (Yes, tried different things to detect if it was JUST a Skyrim lockup ie; alt tabbing and log checking, as well as all the other things mentioned.)

Anyway, after trying a whole bunch of stuff, I gave up and stopped playing.

Then I started getting the same issues with some other games, and contrary to what I just said above, I finally tried declocking my card by about 20Mhz.

Seems to have fixed my problem right up so far as at least in Skyrim it hasnt happened again, yet. (I probably shouldn't be typing this...Murphy)

intel 2630QM

nvidia 540M (296.10)

8gb ram

So far, playing along nicely with FPS 30-60 and I've even re-activated all my mods! Wahoo!!!
