Game is disappointing?

The scenery is fantastic. The water is unbelievable.

The UI is a pain as it was ported almost directly from the console version with no regard as to how a PC UI should function. They actually make it obvious that they didn't do much work to make it into a PC UI when the default controls for the game on PC is a xbox controller. The UI makes it almost unplayable for me. :wallbash:

I am looking forward to a mod hopefully being able to fix it.

yeah, definitely some annoying things - 1 ring, low res textures up close, so far as i can tell, enemies behave stupidly like Morrowind where they don't follow you out of their house/cave whatever to finish you off, the UI - i both love it and hate it - def a junky console port, but it looks cool and works well enough mostly, but def will be improved by mods, and yep the map is gorgeous but not as useful as i hoped. Combat is much better than I remember in Oblivion but still clunky as heck. Gothic 3 and Risen, by far, had the best combat system.

All that said, IT IS AMAZING. 22 hours and going. It's really more of the same with better graphics, more voices and better radiant AI supposedly (we'll see). And I do not want to jinx myself, but it is running well on my PC. No problems although I need to keep it High rather Ultra to avoid some occasional slow downs.

On Master Difficulty it is very rewarding.

CRAP. Now that I posted this, I had my first crash, sigh.

UI sucks - People don't know how to use WASD and E and Tab to navigate menus.

Textures suck - Apparently, the game looks awful to some people. I think they're crazy. This is by far one of the greatest looking games I've seen. (Tbh, I think it's their monitors...)

One ring slot - it does suck, but to be honest, my + 25% damage with Bows is the only Ring I'll ever need :D

Bugs - Nothing is bug free. Especially Bethesda games.

Very interesting. I've heard much about this UI.

To everyone: What sucks about UI? As in the HUD? Can't that be turned off? Or the stats menu and items menu? Is it ugly? Clumbersome? Hard to find items? Controls suck?

To everyone: What sucks about UI? As in the HUD? Can't that be turned off? Or the stats menu and items menu? Is it ugly? Clumbersome? Hard to find items? Controls suck?

Well, let's see.

1) Opening many menus with one key, the intuitive thing would be pressing that same key will close those menus, this is not always the case.

2) Rebinding some key functions will outright break the functionality of that key in other window/menu types (I'm looking at you E key)

3) Mouse only functions in some menus/windows, not all. The Perk window is terrible for it.

4) The Favorites menu is completely unnecessary, all it accomplishes is adding one more step to creating hotkeys as opposed to simply applying the hotkey in the inventory screen.

5) The Inventory menus cannot be sorted in any way, they are forced in alphabetical only, on top of making it a pain in the ass to compare two items' stats side-by-side.

6) Storing items in any container uses different keys to place items in vs removing them, failing to catch that can easily result in consuming rare potions/scrolls/etc rather than successfully sticking them in a chest/box/barrel.

7) Chat windows can and will fail to accept the clicked response, instead applying that click to whatever chat option was centered to the arrow, sometimes forcing repeats of what was said, other times forcing you down one path of a quest instead of another where a yes/no choice must be made.

8) Clicking on subcategories in the Inventory (and some other windows) can result in the UI thinking you meant to click off the menu completely, backing yourself out of the menu instead of moving to that subcategory.

There are others, but those are some of the more obvious issues.

The UI is not all bad, there are some good things there as well.

The HUD is fine. WASD is fine (that's one thing they didn't bork)

One example in Oblivion, it takes 2 mouse clicks to bind a single item to a hotkey. In Skyrim it takes 8 steps using mouse clicks, scroll wheel + various key presses. This is supposed to be simpler and more elegant? It looks suspiciously like it was adapted from the scroll through a weapons list to select a weapon you see on a console.

In default, Left hand is controlled by Right mouse button, and right hand by left button. confusing the first time you try it - looks like they set this with no regard that most will play in first person for close combat. - easy to change though.

There are some good things - the triangle in the inventory that shows a better weapon than the one you have equipped is one example.

Instead of the little icons that were used in the inventory list on previous Elder scrolls games, when you hover over an inventory item, it is displayed in a large format on screen - and can be rotated through all axes to look at it. But, you don't get to see your character wearing the equipment as you add and remove items. - I accidentally removed my armor once and didn't realize it until I saw my character in their underwear when they were killed! :wallbash:

Don't like using E as the do something key? easy to fix rebind to whatever. As I am used to E being jump, I changed do something to space and E to jump - works fine.

Why are there 3 separate keys to allow run/walk? one is a toggle (caps lock), one seems to be to allow you to temporarily walk when you normally run (shift) and the third is called 'Run Straight' do you normally run crooked or what? And then there is 'Sprint' on the Alt key - run faster. What if I want to sprint straight? Do we need another key for that or do I press both C and alt? :psyduck:

There is a separate skills menu key, the front slash (/) way over on the right side away from all of the other keys (can be redefined)

There is not a separate move object key without taking it (Z in Oblivion) instead, you move objects by pressing and holding the same key that you use to take (E)

Most will just take some getting used to, while others can be redefined, and others?

In combat, I have set up my favorites to 1 = bow, 2 = arrows, 3 = hand axe & shield ( the binding seems to allow for both hands - A good thing) For some obscure reason, a shield can only be equipped in the left hand ( same for bow) OK for me - not for someone who wants to play left handed. So far cannot be changed.

Dragon flying around, I press 1 for bow, left click and bow hand moves forward and back - duh, no arrows. I press 2 for arrows, then left mouse to draw bow - same result . Open favorites , arrows show as equipped. ( I did check after binding them) so I manually equip arrows. SAME result. Dragon is now on ground and not too far away. Hit 3 to equip ax & shield - It Works! but dragon has already fried me for half of my health. Dragon finishes me off as I try to run to shelter. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f351/charonn0/ohgeez-1.gif
