Game is disappointing?

I disliked Oblivion but I am thoroughly enjoying what little of Skyrim I have played (why did this game come out right when I had a load of work to do?! :().

On my 4 year old machine it runs very nicely at Ultra settings and I reckon it has space for improvement when the mods start rolling out. Certain people will be pissed off that their SUPER L33T 3 grand machines aren't being tested and feel very silly for spending all that money on a 0.1% graphical improvement.

It is the perfect remedy to people disappointed with Battlefield 3 (the fact that it ain't a true BF game) like me.

The world is deep and awe inspiring. The potential for exploration, adventure and all that comes across as limitless as soon as you enter the world.

The UI is rather pathetic (for the retarded analogue controller) but manageable never-the-less. This will be FIXED with mods.

I was thoroughly unimpressed with Oblivion's graphics and environment when it was released, even Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean could not remedy my dissatisfaction with the game as a whole. Skyrim however feels more alive and despite the combat flaws I do enjoy beheading people.

Pretty much everyone I've heard thinks it's the best game they've ever played.

The complaints about UI are ridiculous, it's usually stupid people that don't even realize you can hotkey items and spells.

I'ts not the best game... yet. Give it some time for a few spectacular mods to be made and then it probably be the best game ever. I currently am torn between a selectively-modded Oblivion or New Vegas as the "best game ever."

I'm used to the UI now, so I complain about it less, but I would like to see it better streamlined for PC use. The hotkey thing was not explained very well from the beginning, so it was confusing to figure out. It would be better if you could also pick which hand to equip to... like if [shift]+hotkey put it in the off/left hand.

That's true, but it wasn't explained well in Oblivion, or Fallout games either. When I went into my weapons list I was unable to hot key from there, I thought that was strange, so I googled "skyrim hotkey" and found out how to do it in 10 seconds. Why would someone assume that because it's not the same as Oblivion, that it's not in the game at all before spending even half a minute on google?

I rememeber first discovering Oblivions greenery, lush forests, and diverse enviroments and being totally blown away by it. You could stand on a tall mountain and watch a gorgeous sunset, and peer out into the vast distance of the beautiful landscape. All we have here is cold mountains with a short limited view, even at maximum settings. I'm very disappointed with the visuals generally. Inside the cities the situation is even worse. Obvlivion's cities blow Skyrim's visuals completely out of the water.

But Oblivion was just copypaste countryside. I don't get what was so attractive about it.

At least Skyrim is a little varied in its environments.

Are you joking ????

Oblivion's enviroment was seperated between sea resorts, country fields, lush forests, green mountains, snowy alps, and industrial cities.

Skyrim is seperated between glaciers, icy, snow, and ice covered rocky mountains. You get a choice between white or grey as far as the eye can see. Try something, Stand on Oblivion's highest mountains, and look out into the distance. You can see the entire landscape with all it's varied features. Try that in Skyrim, you see about 100 feet in front of you and thats about it, and you're not missing anything because the view is the same everywhere, snow, snow.. and more snow.

The buildings?

Oblivion had beautiful cities with varied buildings and each major town had it's own individual architecture and style. Skyrim? You have no idea what city you're in, they all look the same. Almost no buildings, and they come in two colors, grey or brown.

Seriously where is the variety you're talking about ???

The only place where the game has been a slight disappointment is the UI and some of the graphical elements. The aspen trees look like garbage, and the wood textures are astoundingly small. All fixable with some mods.

The UI was clunky and cumbersome before I got a fix (that allows total mouse use, though I still use WASD for the crossroads), and now it's more than tolerable. Definitely better working than Oblivion's now, as clunky as that one was.

Otherwise, the game exceeded my expectations, and I've already put over 30 hours into it! It's absolutely fantastic, and the musical score is as breathtaking as the environments.

I enjoy the hell out of the game and can see myself playing it over a few times, but I do have some complaints (doesn’t everyone?).

Warning longwinded post!!

I love the additional content, tons of weapons armor and the likes. Better magic support than oblivion. Landscape is great, cities are not copy paste. Lots a dungeons and areas to explore meet new things and kill them. basically loving the rich story and tons of content!

BUT!

There are a few drawbacks.

I really wish they would have put some time into improving gameplay! Oblivion was a good stepping stone into this type of gameplay, but it had rather basic controls with block (take damage anyways) and swing. I was hoping for more.

For instance, I would like to be able to kick stuff. That would be a very nice added feature, it is a viable option for combat. When I swing my two handed war hammer at anything it shoots a little dust plays a sound and nothing moves. Really? I just tried to break a glass bottle with a war hammer and it barley even moved. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could break stuff, or at least even hit it?

As it stands all you do is block swing magic. Maybe they could have incorporated something that would allow you do dodge or parry the enemy? When blocking and a guy hits my shield with a sword why does it damage my health, he just hit a huge piece of steel. I would like to be able to block a good portion of an incoming stream of magic with my shield, seriously its hitting my shield not my person. Shoot at my feet if you want to damage me. I want there to be a way around shields, as it stands there is swing and power swing. Surely they could have thought of something to add to the combat to make things a little more interesting? Toggle different fighting styles maybe? As it stands combat is rather bland.

They really need to learn how to animate things and people to bring them to life, I have seen lesser games with better animations. The first time I was fighting a dragon I was like SWEET! After I saw it flying on railroad tracks and the abrupt and unnatural movements it made it drug me out of the immersion and it became eeh. After it was on the ground it got better.

People had better facial expressions in HL2. Seriously better animations please, it kills immersion.

While I love the finishing moves, the animation for everyone I have performed suck. I straddle the dragon and proceeded to carve up its eye and stab my blade next to his head. . . Sneak attack from behind with a dagger results with the rear top of the guys head being slashed. Basically I think the animations are rather crappy. Finishing move on the bear with a war hammer results with the bear trying to eat it, yet it plays the sound of a blade slicing something. . . really?

I still like the game allot even with my list of dislikes. It’s always easier to point out what is wrong rather that what is good.

Obviously you must be playing a different game. I don't see any two holds in Skyrim that look alike! There's a village in a cold marsh that is on wooden stilts, there's a city built into a mountainside, there's a quaint open forest town, and a city that may as well be a fortress (whiterun and solitude, and they even have different architectural styles).

That's nothing to say of the natural beauty of Skyrim, as well. Lush forests in the south bordered by snow-capped peaks, a nice fall forest at a high elevation filled with vibrant reds and oranges, a cold bog, a lush steppe in the center, and a marshy hot spring area all create a variety of environments unmatched by Oblivion, which basically had three biomes.

You haven't even played the game, have you? Clearly you are not describing Skyrim. Sounds more like the Fallout games (I say this even though I cherish them so, mind you).

I love the game, but as others have pointed out, it has a few serious issues.

Bad

  • While I have become used to the interface and can navigate it well, it really is annoying and I look forward to mods to fix it.
  • The map is hard to look at for me. I was hoping for something more like the map in Oblivion.
  • The game is buggy, but I can look past that until we have official/unofficial patches out. Still annoying when my companions get stuck. >.>
  • Like in a Oblivion and the Fallout games, I don't like how the game is adjusted based on your level. It is still much better than Oblivion in this respect, but I played Oblivion with OOO to fix it.

Good

  •
  • NPCs are sooooo much more believable with the better voice acting and actual lives. I really feel immersed with them while in Oblivion it was a pain hearing their odd disjointed conversations.
  • Dungeons, like, holy s***. It's like night and day. Dungeons are sooooo much more fun this time around and I really like stopping at all the random dungeons I see while in Oblivion I only stopped at them for quests most the time.
  • Combat is a huge improvement over Oblivion. Really nice.
  • Game world. The environments are so much more believable than the boring repetitive forest in Oblivion. This world feels bigger too with the huge looking mountains. Weather is better too.
  • Just about everything else.

While I still feel Morrowind is my favorite game in the series(Haven't played Daggerfall(waiting for DaggerXL) or Arena), this game is a lot of fun. All I need are some mods to fix menus, leveling, and immersion and I will very very happy.
