Things i Personally liked and disliked about Skyrim

I'll hop in as well! :)

Liked:

The water - wow! It's so detailed and it has actual force and volume to it! if you jump into a fast moving river, you get pulled by the current! Amazing. This was the first thing that struck me about the game. It no longer looks flat and one dimensional, and it looks like if you were to put your hand in it, it would be freezing cold. (It would be, the land of Skyrim is comparable to Scandinavian countries like Norway and Sweden and unless it's a hot spring, rivers and streams are always ICE cold.)

The animal diversity - this is one way that it's clear the developers were paying attention to the modding community. They saw all the mods for additional wildlife and took it to heart.

companions - again, you can tell the developers were paying attention to what people wanted. There were a bajillion companion mods for Oblivion.

Landscape detail - it's beautiful! Landscape in Elder Scrolls games always tends to be gorgeous, even way back in Morrowind. But they really outdid themselves this time!

The atmosphere - It's a grittier game than Oblivion was. In Oblivion Cyrodiil looked almost like a fairy tale land with it's lush grass lands and beautiful forests, and the alternate dimension of Oblivion was disturbing and visceral, like a twisted fairy tale, oh and the wonders of Sheogorath's realm! That was great for that game. Skyrim is much grittier, the story line is more convoluted and darker. In some parts of the story, no matter what choice you make someone is gonna get screwed. The line between good and evil is not as clearly defined. The landscape reflects that.

Characters: The people in the Elder Scrolls game just get better and better looking. Not necessarily more attractive (though those blocky people in Morrowind were pretty ugly to me, lol). I like the more natural dialogue as well. I also enjoy listening to the bards when I go into an inn. Very nice detail Bethesda! And, so far as I can tell, there is more than one voice actor for each race and gender of character! Or if there isn't, it's not as obviously the same person as it was in Oblivion.

Disliked:

Character design options: Granted, my computer is a dying beast with a damaged motherboard than can only run Skyrim on it's lowest settings (Just wait until February when I get my new one *SQUEE*) but I was unimpressed with the lack of freedom in character design. Of course, they may have done that to give us modders plenty of room.

Horses: There's not really a lot of variety there. You can get horses with different colored coats and that's about it. They're all the same speed (I checked) and same stats. But again, Bethesda might have done it on purpose to leave it open for modders. Horses were something modders liked to work with a lot in Oblivion.

AI: The companion AI needs a bit of tweaking, I'm always getting stuck behind that damn dog of mine!

Naming: I want to give my horses and dog names of my own, but I cannot!

So, overall there wasn't really a lot that I disliked thus far. I must say, it's really been worth the wait and I haven't even started on the side quests for Mage, Fighter, Thief and Assassin. Kudos to Bethesda!

Want the REAL reason why all of the textures are low res and hair looks like shat? and... (well i cant explain the lack of options under character creations) but the game was made for console then ported to pc. so everything is designed to run on a 150 dollar computer with a few things added for the pc users but the base game is made for an extremely low end computer.

Yeah, I understand that you can't compare and Xbox to a full blown PC. I build my own systems, but to be frank, never really paid much attention to the details on how the Xbox works. I have an older Xbox 360 and it still seems to work fine. Yes, it does put out a lot of heat and I have it on a wire pie rack..if you can believe that, laying horizontal, not standing up and this seems to have taken care of the heat issue, plus I let it cool down for a few minutes before I shut it off. After I read your comment, I did a bit of research on my vintage Xbox, and I do know I have the upgraded motherboard, but what surprised me is...apparently there are three ATI GPU's chained together for the video. Explains the heat, doesn't it? I didn't know this.

Anyway, it doesn't make sense to me to spend all this time (how many years?) to create this caliber of game for the Xbox and then port it to PC. Seems it should be the other way around, I think this is what was done for Witcher 2 and from what I read, seems to work fine, that is, it was made for PC, then stepped down to the Xbox. If this game was made for the Xbox platform, then I guess we can forget any serious updates to get it up to speed.

I appreciate your post, thanks.

It enjoyed playing Skyrim from the beginning. My first though about the game is Bethesda spent a lot of time looking at the community mods and incorporated those ideas to improve from Oblivion. It's sort of like Oblivion with lots of mods and less crashing. At the sametime it simplifies even more from Oblivion, which is why I think it should be more profitable than Oblivion for them.

The landscape is beautiful and incredible, especially for the glacier areas which are majestic. Unfortunately the developers still haven't implement enough new ideas so the gameplay is still limited, if not more limited than Oblivion. Traveling through the overworld is still a lonely experience, except for trying to avoiding beasts too powerful for you and the dragons. I like how beasts are tougher and your first encounter with a saber tooth or cave bear is a tough and long fight. But I hate dealing with these dragons 10 times more than the cliff racers, especially when you're trying to explore. To make the overworld more lively, there should've been things like outside flee market next to the farms, more traveling people, carnivals, sailing, and any other miscellaneous things that apply to the game series, ie. stuff to do outdoor besides hiking.

The game textures are fine, I do know it could be better, but I'm happy the game run smooth with my fanless HD5700 card. Just make sure your video card's mipmap details is set to highest.

Dislikes:

-Clunky fighting: Not sure if its just me, but I think its much easier to fight in Oblivion, its not so fun to melee in this game. Hand on hand combat is not very good. I haven't got to high level of archery, but using the bow is clunky. I prefer how the arrows arch itself in Oblivion so I have to calculate my aim, so sure if its also true in Skyrim.

-Magic abuse: You can get 20MP on level up and it regenerate very fast, so I just run around during fight waiting for it to fill up. Since its less clunky than the weapons and very powerful I abuse it.

-Alchemy: It's more difficult to get alchemy ingredients which I like so I can't abuse making 99 healing health potions for example. But there aren't many types of potions to make and I don't like having to do it stationary, including smithing. I want potions to walk on water, feather, jump high, slow fall, and those miscellaneous properties. Unless I'm wrong, it seems there are no limit to number of potions you can use at once, which make fights easy. With that said, they added smithing which is cool.

-Face maker: This topic has been covered enough. Having problem creating an attractive face, my char looks ugly. This can be a positive effect so when I go to download mods for this game its not all nude and pretty emo chick mods, I think Nexus should create a separate section for that stuff so I don't have to wade through them.

-No stats: Very disappointing! Well they merges the stats with the skill, but you still lose some skills since its too simplified. I think their "level up constellation" is copied from that Final Fantasy game.

-Audio gain: The gain of the explore music is too low and the battle music is too loud, I hate that. But the music is within the *.bsa file, so I can't delete the battle songs or make changes to them. But can I understand as it's part of the game system ability to have greater manipulation with the music such as resuming a song. Effects by default are too loud. Yes you can change the volume for effect and voice, etc, but if I was designing a game, I would definitely pay attention to those things.

-Less guilds and factions.

Overall, this game delivers a better gameplay experience than Oblivion for players who aren't into RPG can still enjoy it, but I think I will finish it sooner and go back to Morrowind or Oblivion which has more gameplay details. With much simpler stats and less detailed character aesthetic (face makers, clothings) I feel my character doesn't have much identity in Skyrim.

Malfunctioning controls

Useless map

Repetitive dialogue

Liked:

Way more stable than Oblivion (for me at least)

Less ugly NPCs and more natural AI

No more boring speechcraft pie

Talking no longer stops time.

Fallout lockpicking

Dragons

Seperate Power/Dragon shout button

Better levelling system, Perks (although they still need some tweaking).

Finishers (should of been optional though)

Atmosphere, landscape

Physics, yes even with the Giants included.

Disliked:

De-saturated world. (thank you FXAA)

UI (though I don't think it's that bad, yay for mods anyway)

Occasional Texture Fail (mods to the rescue again)

Loss of some character creation stuff, my elf/human characters look gaunt, preset colours.

Bugs

Steam

Innovation mostly borrowed from Mods

Abusability of Enchant/Blacksmith/Alchemy (Not in itself but people who abuse it then complain the game is too easy... 100% chameleon anyone?)

The accents, very jarring going from Arnie impersonations to Generic American.

Awkward map.

IMO Vanilla Skyrim is way better than Vanilla Oblivion, although I'm mostly saying that because it's more stable for me. A few of my pet peeves are already taken care of via mods, heres hoping for more.

No 3d support, low Rez textures, no foot prints, poor character animations

Actual environments and details are great. Loving the many stories too. Sound amazing. They got so much right.

Really they should have implemented 64bit support, direct x11 and 3d out of the box, then everybody would be happy - it would have benefited them to do this but I guess well never know why they went to a lot of trouble to make this game and then came up short at the end.

Still the sales are great so they are laughing all the way to the bank.

-Dislikes-

I so agree on the nappy hair. Last night I was using my female character and had to showracemenu like five times to try and see if I could find a hair style that didn't look like a horse hair wig.

Faces all looking worn and beat up... It's impossible to make my female character look youthful and vibrant. They all look beat up and worn out.

Again, the character customization tool needs to be revamped... Some better lips and noses would be nice... Also, the chin can not be completely customized, it always has a certain drastic pitch to it.

Eyes, something is not quite right about the eyes. Character's eyes look dead.

Obviously the user interface, it's horrible. I'm still not used to it.

The Companion's story line was waaay too short for me. It was much shorter than the Fighter's guild storyline in Oblivion.

There is no frostbite or anything like that, despite swimming though lakes in a snow storm, wearing metal armor.

You can basically complete the whole game without sleeping.

Followers are not actual characters that effect the story or act like a side kick. They are basically your shadow who just stand around and do whatever you do... They never disagree or communicate with you, they just stand around like stupid goons.(this is my biggest dislike) Horrible AI.

-Likes-

Story line is interesting and feels epic.

Decapitations.

More decapitations.

Open world.

Nude mods.

As was said already on this post Bethesda could've taken a few pointers from fable. The world/NPCs in fable 2 and 3 had so much more character than Skyrim.

Seems as though everyone shares about the same likes and dislikes. Except for the lockpicking and I don't think I saw mention of questlines.

Lockpicking

The minigame is perfectly fine, but I wish the perks that made it easier to pick instead allowed you to even attempt to pick the lock. It almost makes putting perks into Lockpicking, other than to get that final perk, worthless.

Questlines

Maybe it's just me, but the questlines are just downright bad.

  • Too short
  • Poor story (Just did not interest me at all)
  • Endings are horrible
  • You don't feel like the leader of the guild once you finish it's questline

Then there's the UI that has already been mentioned in probably every post. It should have looked something like this:

Nice and organized, takes up the entire screen, has a search bar, has filter options, and it just looks prettier.

I'm enjoying Skyrim very much. I never liked Oblivion, sorry Oblivion fans but it bored me. I'm not a dungeons and dragons kind of guy. Fallout3 was much more my thing. Probably my favorite game of all time.

I don't think the graphics are bad at all. What matters to me is that everything runs smoothly. The Witcher2 might have better textures but I couldn't get it to run well on my modest rig. Skyrim looks great and runs very smoothly, and I like that a lot.

Clearly though, the game is a good few patches away from being finished. There are lots of bugs and glitches, so I'm taking it very slowly and am in no hurry to finish the game.

Dislike

-------

The horrible twitchy interface that doesn't respond correctly when clicking on options.

3rd person only on horses and not being able to use weapons while mounted.

Ugly characters. Bethesda always like everyone to be ugly in all their games, don't they? We need Project Beauty.

Not much weapon or armor variety.

Like

----

The voice acting. They've done a far better job this time. Almost Bioware standard. Almost.

Environments. Beautiful and sometimes scary.

Combat. It's very cool.

Companions. They're not as good as they could be, but the modding community will flesh them out for sure.
