pastafrola
I think mages enemies are very powerful. You need some serious enchants/perks/blessings on master to survive. One example is the quest for the Azura star, the fight inside.
Staind716
You ever get the feeling that the PC's spells were supposed to scale the same way the NPC mage's spells are supposed to scale but they forgot to implement it?Yes, that's why I finally got disgusted with my under powered mage and downloaded the Balanced Magic mod. Now the scaling is much better as long as you pick a version that doesn't make you ridiculously powerful.
thesapien
Wow, what a wash of responses. Some good, some bad, some ignoring that your character is a mage, too. I disagree with others who said fire is always good. Fire is best when you intend to follow through with a weapon because fire causes enemies to take on more damage. That might not be your plan. (Unless it's a troll mage, fire will prevent healing, but they don't exists.) Shock will drain their magic on top of doing damage. So that's good. However, a better way to drain their magic if they use warding is to pretend like you're going to shoot something at them but don't; just let them waste magic holding up that ward. Then probably shoot. Actually, that is one of the best ways to bring down a more powerful mage. Cast something that has distance but wait to fire, waiting for them to waste away their power on holding that ward, then when they drop it, let them have it. Note: if you're casting magic you won't regenerate magic while holding it. So, if you're also low, an arrow works really well because mages don't have armor to protect them. But if you're not a mage who carries a bow and don't yet have a firebolt/ball or lighting bolt or anything magical with distance, then back to straight up lighting in one hand and a dagger in the other and be prepared for it coming down to mages with daggers. I think it's most fun going up against a similar build enemy who is more powerful and forces you to really outfight them with your skill.
Feanoro
lol I recently got pwnzored by a volkihar vampire last night. First we traded off spells and I had to heal myself a few times (I'm lvl 66 on master, playing a khajiit but I have a pretty high magic resistance both from enchants and alteration perks). Despite my constant spams of dual-casted Thunderbolts he didn't seem to run out of Mana, but at some point he decided to bring out his steel sword and charge me with it in a power attack. Since I was 2/3 health and had armor well in excess of the armor cap and max stats and everything I though "oh yay now I get to kill him". But guess what? That sumbitch pwnzored me harder than a Draugr Deathlord's Ebony Warhammer power attack. What's up with that lol... Anyway, I'm new to magic, my build is stealthy archer mostly but yeah, mages can be an arrow to the knee sometimes. And speaking of arrows, I still find the ranging fus ro dahing Deathlords with ebony arrows the most annoying:)
Anatorax
Can't deal with mages? Play Breton, take Atronach stone, activate Dragonskin = eat pwn all you can for 60 seconds. Just make sure you have damage output in order to be done in 60 seconds.
justwannaddl
I just let my summons do all the work while I hide under a rock. Dead thralls armed with staves clear up most messes with minimal fuss. Hiding behind brutes and running for the hills isn't for everyone though. VincentIcarus
What I've noticed and the reason I think enemy mage's are unbalanced is because the shock spells that are supposed to drain their magicka don't actually drain their magicka. As a test run, I found an enemy mage and using console commands I raised his health to 2,000 HP and just hit him full blast with all of my shock spells. He only had 200 magicka and the spell I was using drained 30 magicka per second. So I should've only had to hit him for 7 seconds to fully drain his magicka. After a full one minute blast, he was still throwing ice spikes at me like it was going out of style. Are NPC mages overpowered? Yes.
Matth85
Are they powerfull?Yes. Can you fix that?Yes. How?Get the stone that gives magic resistance.Get the pers inside the Alteration tree to get magic resistance. What happens? You reach 80% magic resistance, just about capped. Now, a level 40ish bandit mage will hit me for..say.. 200 per hit with 0 resistance. (((200/100)*80)-200)=40. So the hit is not 40. If you play wise, you will average 200-400 health. Let's say 300. That means they need to hit you 300/40 = 8 times.8 times is a lot. At least consider after 1 hit you would run for cover, summon something or heal. So basically, work on alteration and find that stone which gives magic resistance. Capping yourself with no effort.

Better way would be to make sure the NPCs play by the rules and don't have cheat spells or abilities. Hopefully the CK will give us that ability. rpger30
I'd much rather have NPC mages that were consistent instead of overly weak or strong. I agree with the sentiment of the various posters who would like to see NPC mages play by the same rules as PC mages. An easy power compensation would be to have their level scaling increased. This would eliminate the bullcrap one-shotting of anyone under level 40, while also eliminating the super wimpy mages who can be one-shotted.
