It really bothers me that men are hitting on my male character

This is a fantasy game. Different people do have different fantasies. Not my particular fantasy at all, but I'm not going to say it should be banned because it offends someone. If we do start banning things just because some people are offended by them, then soon we wouldn't have much of a game left.

A quote I saw somewhere - author unknown

Everyone is offended by something. I am offended by your being offended - so there. http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/tongue.gif

I think the real issue here is not what it is, but rather how there is no limitation on it. All the people you can marry with a male character you can marry with a female character, with no disqualification for the NPCs preferences. It's something that just feels out of place compared to the real world. People just don't like this sort of ambiguity in the characters they interact with.

I do agree here actually. the NPCs ought to have more preference and discrimination. we can't all be pansexual :P

Well for example in the place I`m from and been living in for a very long time I`ve met 0 gay people. I haven`t heard about somebody actually being gay. There`s no homosexuality amongst my friends, their families nor my family, so it´s not coded into my world for example. It may be coded into the world in general, but so are many other things that are less natural/normal than others.. and whether there are reasons to put some of them that many people will find offensive into video games, is what I`m talking about.

Also, you don't know what goes on in other people's heads. The most manly man in the world might fantasize about having a gay relationship, and either not act on it, or not tell you about it. Same with women.

True.

And given that homosexual behavior is pretty common amongst mammals, your claim that it's not natural is, like your claims about history, patently false. Please do some research before you make statements.

And yet, at the same time - if its all so normal, we wouldnt have these discussions on the Board in politics, heck - even in most countrys? i have heard that argument with the "oh so common behaviour from mammals" quite a few times. there are a few single observations within a large range of species. Please do some research before you make statements.

Agreed as well, though now I am stuck with an image of the Dragonborn playing a part in the Corsican Brothers:

-He's trisexual!

-Trisexual?

-Yeah, he'll try anything: men, women, goats, chickens, dogs, mud... anything!

While I agree that an argument based on 'animals do it so it is normal for people as well' is a logical fallacy, many animals do readily get jiggy in the same sex, it's not all that uncommon as it happens. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexual_behavior_in_animals

I don't see what the fuss is about, there isn't any sexuality in the game, you could swap "Will you marry me" for "Do you want to open a shop in my house" and it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference.

It's just their own thoughts which make them uncomfortable. In their mind they imagine that dudes are kissing or something.

I like to imagine people walking out of the tavern backwards making sure no NPC is checking out their ass.. all paranoid about gays in Skyrim.. which doesn't really exist.. unless you actively engage in it. Not that I have found anyway.

I haven’t bothered with any of the ‘romance’ in the game so far, but I’d think the whole reason they have the amulet the way they do is so that people can choose what type of characters they want to romance so as not to be bothered by sexuality issues. If you don’t want to romance that goat, don’t wear the amulet talking to it :P

It really IS that simple, isn’t it? If you choose to be bothered with it at that point, it’s your personal problem and showing a slight bit too much sensitivity for the issue as far as I’m concerned. Don’t rain on other people’s parades – be nice, be glad there are more options in the game rather than less so that more people can play the character they want to play which is sort of what the Elder Scrolls games are about.

This is, by the way, the way games are heading now. Dragon Age II was a lot more blunt about it than Skyrim is. You might want to get accustomed to the fact that chances are, game makers from now onwards will be open-minded about these kind of things, and if getting hit on by a few characters of your own gender is so absolutely bothersome and heinous, that’s your problem and you’ll just have to wait for the appropriate mods to remove the option, somewhere down the line.

Don’t we all want more options, more freedom, more right to play the characters we want? If that’s the case, don’t we want the same for other people too?

As for what’s ‘realistic’ and what was ‘possible in these times’, it’s not really an issue, is it? It’s not a historically accurate game. I’ve never seen any cat-people or lizard-men in our history books and like someone else mentioned, women weren’t really allowed to wear armour and fight for most of history.

No mage’s colleges, no dragons, no ancient dwarven ruins or huge spiders or strange elf-folk that have gone blind in the dark. This isn’t history, it’s fantasy. If they say gay marriage is this acceptable, I’m afraid you’ll just have to live with it.

Complain about it if you like but it will make no difference. I doubt you’ll see a lot of games of this type without gay relationships and marriages in them, from now on.

Times are changing.

Oh, and stop wearing the amulet and chatting guys up :P
