Female main PC is much better

My point is that i want variety in my characters tone... My character should not be cheery and happy all the freakin time. Also my point on saints row is directed at how they have 3 options for both male and female. We are not playing ME where we have a prebuilt character that we have limited influence in creating so having only one option in Fallout is not enough.

If anything I have a problem with being railroaded into emotional moments by the games design. There is no option to avoid teary moments over Shaun in certain dialogues. Even if you don't give two shits, since for one the game didn't give you sufficient opportunities to even learn about the family you're supposed to grieve over. And secondly, due to low levels, you aren't even capable of venturing out on the quest the game shoehorns you into.

I'm all for more voice options. But emotions don't seem to be the problem in most instances.

Adding a voice to the main character is definitely a double-edged sword. Do it well and it can really enhance a character and a great game but if you're sloppy about it then it comes off as a distraction and a burden for the player to have to constantly listen to. I think FO4 came somewhere in the middle. I play a male character and while the voice doesn't bother me, some of the lines and dialog seemed a bit off. I don't blame the actor for it but rather the direction or lack of that was given. It's hard to tell.

I think I would of had a harder time with a voiced character in Skyrim. I think I was a little more invested in the character. So I 'm wondering if they continue with this in the next TES game.

It's certainly not the voice bothering me. The lines are delivered professionally and fitting the occasion. As I said, the only thing bothering me, and that's tied to shoehorning the story, is the no escape route of having to choose certain dialogue options in certain situations instead of having the option of staying evasive.

But that's not the topic of this thread, isn't it?

that is exactly how i view it. i think in some cases the dialog was great and the voice acting really really isnt all that bad (depending on version, i hear several of the dubs were awful) it really isnt the actors fault they were just following the script and what was asked of them by the director. my big gripes are:

1) the smiling! look i am fine with emotions and stuff but every other sentence having a smile is stupid. this is a post-apocalypse world. i want someone who is grim and depressed. someone who is trying to get by. even a fake smile or something would be better but the tone always shows that my character is happy. same goes for a lot of the dialog.

2) more emotions. remember when you tell the baseball guy he's wrong? yeah why dont we get more of that? why cant we choose to be straight up mad or an a-hole? seriously the 'sarcasm' is often just light hearted stuff when i want to be mean. really we get several (not many though) moments where we can see the character emote and it is all that bad... except for when the female actress is sad... that can be a bit grating at times.

3) if we didnt get the stupid new dialog wheel we could actually get more of this. in fact someone pointed out how it would have been better. the 3 options give you a different dialog branch such as "sarcastic, "mean", and "nice" with each having the same choices but with different ways to say it.

4) the dialog wheel is stupid. i get it if people dont like the whole text thing but that could have been done with the old system and still allowed for a lot more dialog options.

I pretty much hate the way they've handled the voiced protag in FO4. Bethesda's writing for the player character is almost always the most poorly done dialogue in their games, and FO4 is no exception to that. I mean, did they think having voice actors deliver that bad dialogue would magically improve it? I cringe whenever Nate/Nora say something. Not because of their delivery, which is fine and sometimes quite good, but because the dialogue is just so terrible.

I honestly and seriously cannot understand why Bethesda went in this direction. The TES games and FO3 had this unique blend of epically designed game worlds with a customizable protag you could bury yourself in and create wild backstories about. Why they thought putting the focus on one of their greatest weaknesses (consistently subpar writing) and removing what is one of the most valued characteristics of their older games (players get to do whatever they can imagine with their characters) baffles me.

I wish I'd been in the meeting when they decided to do it just to hear how/why they thought a voiced protag, done the way they've done it, was going to improve the experience in FO4 in such a way that it would provide an excellent Bethesda gaming experience. I hate to think they purposefully tried to create a more generic game or that they thought they needed to do that in light of how wildly successful Skryim has been. It's truly baffling.

I like both voice actors. Jack grifting Garrus is great.

However I find the Male VA delivers some lines better than the Fem VA. example: When you get Tenpines settlement Female VA says : That settlement you sent me too has...decided to join the minutemen(in the most out of place way possible). Where as the Male VA says in the same quest: That settlement you sent me too has decided to join the minutemen(in the most normal way possible).

Then you have things like when you first come out of the freezer the Male VA has more emotion when interacting with Nora, where the Fem VA seems to try and act "freezing" which is fine but her reaction to Nate was a bit non emotional. Fem VA has a better reaction towards Shaun when you first meet him. but like I said it's a mix between both VA's.

Well - having heard the same lines by the same voices over and over again DO tend to get boring. But still - for screenshooting and storytelling - which is my excuse for playing this game- I think the facial animations add a lot compared to the stone faces of FO3 and NV.
