Trey5511
I think a lot of people who bring up this question are into RPing or imagining their character being themselves. (or just meathead jerks trying to look cool for some reason) For a lot of people, playing a character isn't anything like that; it's just a means to play the game. In that case, it could be seen as less sissy a guy playing a female character than a guy pretending he's someone else. Not trying to be insulting, that's just how I see it. Oh god, the complexity! No, you're a sissy for playing a girl in video games! No, you're the real sissy and you're just surpressing it and projecting on me! Really, why does this question have to be accompanied by such shows like this?
Reddimus
Show? Right. I'm curious why this is brought up when I know so many who play female characters 'just don't care'. It's not a big deal at all to them. They're ordinary people. On some level it shows some insecurity asking about this. Though the OP didn't really phrase it in an offensive way. Trey5511
Though the OP didn't really phrase it in an offensive way. And yet the hordes of people come flooding in to reaffirm their masculinity, or security. I can start the wall o' quotes regarding what I meant by 'show', if you want. edit:ima tard. fallenmerucyr
I started playing female characters back on Unreal 1 just because until recently it seemed like male models in games were just ugly. Human males in WoW being a great example of ugly faces (not the graphical limitations but the hair/face options). Skyrim does have some great male models but I guess old habits die hard. Also in games like Fallout New Vegas when the "adult activity" mods came out I just like playing as a girl that expresses, should I say....free love? I'm far from a hardcore RP person but I'm not so closed minded that playing a girl is something that insults my ego and makes me feel like a little girl. Ive known guys to act as if playing as a woman is breaking some secret man rule. People like that need to really look at themselves and see why such a trivial matter makes them uncomfortable. Riddleofsteel
I play a female in RPGs like Skyrim/Oblivion and Dragon Age/Mass Effect at least once. If I have to watch my character from behind for an entire thorough playthrough, they might as well be... you know.
Reddimus
I gave my answer. I guess you missed it because you thought my post was too inflammatory? I never called the OP a sissy. It was a scenario. Thinking that he might RP as well gives a better explanation as to why he didn't understand why people don't necessarily fall in line with that thinking. Do me a favor and read my first post again objectively, without thinking I'm trying to be offensive, because I wasn't. Sorry, you're right, I did indeed misread your post, so I must retract some of the statements I made about you not answering it. But nonetheless, my original observation remains, in that this topic is almost always accompanied by things such as issues of masculinity, normality, etc. And a surprising number of people seem to have taken the time to justify it too. It comforts me to hear you have a large number of friends who simply don't care.
theonecrisco
Good discussion so far. I think the main reason I never really choose to play as a female is because I don't feel any immersion as a female character.. Whenever I play an RPG I like to imagine it as myself as another character but it still being me. I always kind of figured that is what everyone else did. I learned a lot from your responses.. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
documn
I am male. When I play RPGs that allow me to make different characters, I always make a mix of male and female. I just like the variety. There are a few other minor things I appreciate, like when an NPC's behavior changes depending on whether my character is male or female, or when a game DOES NOT give females a skimpier version of a piece of armor, etc.
LuDux
I dunno. I can understand if a gay guy wants to play a game where he watches a guys butt all the time. I think that's okay.
