Let me get this straight about modding with Steam..

I've just read the entire post on the nexus homepage discussing the SDK for Skyrim and the intergration of Steamworks, and was wondering...

Will the intergration of steam prevent us using mods such as the ones in Oblivion? In other words, will we still be able to share, download and install things such as massive custom expantions and house/weapon mods as normal? Or will we be FORCED to only install modifications through the (rather lame and oversecure) Steamworks service? I mean, I don't dislike steam, but I'm not a fan of the forced intergration, to my eyes it has the potential to bring a lot of trouble to the PC community.

So, is Steam going to limit modifications we can make with the creation kit? Or is it just a way to crack down on piracy that won't effect us at all (I was happy to see a script extender out so I'M assuming that's a good sign).

Replies and light-shedding would be appriciated as I've been worried about this since I found out about the forced usage of Steam and I don't want the modding community to suffer because of it, the nexus has been a goldmine ever since I started Oblivion on the PC in '07.

Thanks in advance for replies :)

We know very little about it so far, but it seems that:

- The Construction Kit will be linked to the Steamworks service, which may or may not entail being connected to Steam at the time and may or may not mean anything you create is automatically uploaded to Steamworks once finished.

- The CK will "bundle" mods for you and all mods from Steamworks will be "automatically installed" which some interpret to mean there will be a standardised file type.

- There will almost certainly be paid mods alongside free mods, which can only end well.

- Most importantly, "You’ll still be able to upload/share/access Skyrim mods on fan-created mod sites."

And in terms of raw speculation, I can't see Valve being pro-script extender, considering the whole "forcing-a-patch-on-you-to-encrypt-the-exe" thing.

Nothing will definiately be uploaded to steamworkshop when you save it, you will have to choose to publish. Which will be integrated into the CK itself. Just like the game, you will need to have steam running to use the CK. it'll probably work in offline mode.

Far from certain. In fact I very much doubt that this game.

I'm afraid I have to oppose to this one. There is no certainty that paid mods will ever come to be as there is no concrete evidence to support this claim. The best we have to make due with are two quite vage statements from Bethesda of which one seems to oppose to the idea of paid mods while another seems to state that a paid mod system might be of affect in the future. Either way not enough to state interpretations as facts. Another objection I have is you fielding the statement that such a system of paying for user created modifications may only end well. I for one think such a system will get very messy resulting in far more profits for the publisher than the actual creators themself aswell as destroying the very priciple these modding communities are based on which is the free distribution and usage of data and resources. In my view this can only end in some form of elitism for those that possess the means to create or obtain great forms of work aswell as even more rivalry between community members about stolen or used content.
