51 here and thoroughly enjoying Skyrim. Been a while since any FPS has been on my pc (doing mostly MMO's last few years - which are all so run of the mill now).

Whilst I see so much of Gen ADHD wanting to race through the content and "beat" the game, then complain about it I prefer to take things slowly.

Absorb the lore, explore, craft, try different things and tactics.

I've been playing computer games since 1980. Yes, thats a whole nearly 32 years. Whilst the games these days are "buggier" than in the past, they are also a whole lot more complex, immersive and graphically light years ahead of what they were back then. I can put up with the bugs (and work around them as needed) as I can really appreciate what the software can do these days.

What I really like is the ability to mod the game and alter parameters through the console. Customising is the best thing to ever happen.

I've got the benefit of hindsight and luckily a career in software development. I know what the games of the past were like and can appreciate the effort (and incredible levels of difficulty) required to deliver something like Skyrim.

Maybe those without the experience need a good dose of Larn to get some perspective

Let the modders offer everyone customized challenge in the future. Let's ask Bethesda to create a program that is more stable for mods.

If they'd release a good and stable engine (one that isn't primarily designed to run on consoles) and a creation kit and we would have a sort of open source RPG. Thats really all we need. Instead of modding an existing game, everyone collectively would actually build the game. From adding a new piece of armor, a cup, furniture or some food item, to adding complete quests, new areas to explore, dungeons and cities.

Everyone would be free to choose what module they want to add, but I'd imagine the most popular ones would cluster and become sort of the established world. To which more could than be added and so on. Over the months and years it would grow into a huuuuge world.

Now that would be something. :turned:

The 1.2 patch discussions and Steam concerns disturb me much more than difficulty.

Same here. Not licking it at all. The thing with Steam is that the so called convenience of this service comes at the expense of becoming dependent and a potential loss of privacy. Steam is slowly growing into an omnipresent monster, placing itself between the publisher and customer, impossible to get around. Not good.

My first was a VIC 20...and I didn't enjoy it much. Now, I build gaming PC's for my "always younger" buddies.

I had a Vic 20. I used to type in the games manually from magazines and save them to cassette tape :geek:

Aaaargh cassette tape, gawd but that takes me back.

Certain radio stations years ago used to broadcast that ruddy awful program noise so you could record it on your old all singing all dancing Binatone radio cassette player.

It sometimes worked too, so long as said Binatone didn't unspool the damn cassette before it finished recording it, mine went for a trip out of a seventh story window for that very reason

So is anyone here young? Have I been at a senior(no offense, everyone gets old, I love old people) forum this entire time?

I'm young at heart. Does that count?

That makes two of us, it's the body that has other ideas.
