Use mods. Click categories on the skyrim nexus, gameplay changes, and sort by endorsement amount in descending order. Most of magic mods let you pick and mix .esp files. I did that, and now my second character's a mage.

What if, instead of learning new destruction spells, you just had four types: # Bolt, # Spray, # Rune and # Explosion. Then as you gained the relevant perks (apprentice destruction, adept destruction etc) the four spells get more powerful. Completing the 'Power of the Elements' quest gives you the ability to combine elements in your spells (for example, your attacks do both fire and ice damage)

OR (and let me know if Im going to fast here) we could give the player - wait for it - the ability to craft their own spells, so they can get the damage/magicka cost balance they need for each level. We can even (if we are being particularly controversial) balance this out by making it a service you need an npc for, that costs more gold the better the spell is. Groundbreaking stuff here!

I know there are mods that boost Destruction's effectiveness which is great, but what I'm looking forward to is a mod to craft your own spells. Why Bethesda didn't include it (even with limitations) I may never understand. They could have made it so that you had to become Archmage or make it a certain ways through the main quest or something....meh.

With enchanting it makes getting any of the high level perks in destruction worthless. 100% mana reduction for 4 enchants or get 5 perks that give you half mana reduction. The perk that reduce cost in the magic skills are made obsolete by enchanting. Destruction magic is the the weakest offensive perk trees.

This mod helps a ton:

Improved destruction.

For example, single cast incinerate without the mod is 90 damage with all perks, with the mod + all perks its 141 damage. And you get 2.5x for dual cast over 2.2x originally. You can actually do decent damage with dual cast destruction now.

And the master level destruction spells got very good buff, especially Lightning Storm which is now 270 or so per second with all perks. Firestorm is insta cast, but IMO that is overkill, I would have made the cast time similar to dual casting a spell just to make it somewhat balanced, but also agree that the original cast time is also ridiculous and essentially makes the spell worthless.

Due to lack of mana during the early levels I was using my 2h more often than magic. I did not expect the higher level spells to complete deplete my mana completely in a few casts. I did not look into mods to improve destruction gameplay because I thought it would be better overtime. I played the for the first week as a mage and stopped leveling it because my quest diverted me everywhere but the mage college. Weeks later I rarely use destruction magic. I may try that mod when I start my next character.

Using destruction without any -cost equipment is pretty much suicide later on. With or without that mod.
