Morrowind Rebirth

Cool. I was just looking at a map of Solstheim and as far as I can tell, there were four major settlements: Fort Frostmoth, Skaal, Thirsk, and Castle Karstaag.

As you can see here, the interiors for the nordic settlements of Solstheim had a major influence on the architecture of Skyrim

Yeah it was the similarities between the two that made me think of it, I can't think of anything that would really need new assets, even Castle Karstaags exterior could be fashioned using Skyrims icebergs or rocks with an ice texture applied to them. Apart from those places you mentioned the only other settlement I can think of is Raven Rock, again though that could easily be done with Skyrims assets...

I'm playing Morrowind at the moment, when I've levelled enough to survive stepping outside of Fort Frostmoth I'll have a look around.

The great thing about the vanilla Skyrim assets is that they already look fantastic. The level of work that has already been put into the game really shows. If the island is already there( fingers crossed), I dont see why we wouldnt be able to put some place holders at the areas of the settlements and then improve upon the ground work. The real work, of course, will be constructing unique NPCs, path finding, and quests, which always seem to bug out at some point. But as far as "building" the towns and forts go, many of the stock buildings in Skyrim will serve the purpose nicely until newer resources become available(such as through an official expansion or two). The next problem will be Vvardenfell and "Dunmer" style architecture. As you probably remember, Morrowind buildings(in Balmora for example), had a clay/adobe feel to them, as well as the fact that they were supposed to be made out of a Chitin material.

One of the biggest problems with MorrOblivion(other than its copyright problems) is that it looks like an older game with texture replacers. The models themselves have not been updated and, honestly, improved Morrowind actually does look better(and retains the "feel" of the original game) than Morrowind with Oblivion models and textures. Oblivion models and textures work for Oblivion, but not for Morrowind. The quality and feel just isnt there, in my opinion. Morrowind feel vast and mysterious, filled things to explore. Morroblivion feels vast and empty, with little in it to do( having a large FOV with no fog of war doesnt help much, you can tell my preference for TES 3 by now XD).

Sadly I don't think Solstheim is there, I went for a fly around outside Skyrims borders and didn't see it. I know what you mean about Morroblivion, it just doesn't feel like Morrowind, the lack of voices from the NPCs doesn't help, the place is strangely quiet.

I think rebuilding Solstheim would be an amazing idea, but to the lore of what it would be in the time we are playing Skyrim in.

According to the lore, a lot of Dunmer fled to the island after the argonian invasion. I think seeing a talented modder make this would be amazing.

Remake Morrowind? That would be a rather lengthy task and you'd need a large team and some very dedicated modders. Not sure if theres any real need given the amount of graphic updates there are for Morrowind anyway. Solstheim is far more practical as others have mentioned. ;)

For myself I was planning maybe a Dunmer themed outpost on the game borders and possibly some new textures and models based on the Morrowind armour and clothing designs but thats about the limits of my ambition. Of course if anyone does seriously want to remake Morrowind then go for it.

I think remaking Solstheim would be a good start. My computer is crap though -_-. Will wait for SDK and see what happens after that^^. That said, I would still like to keep this open so that people who are interested in this sort of project could start to gather together.

Remaking Solstheim is something that I'd say is actually do-able, considering you already have the vast majority of the models at your disposal. Remaking Morrowind in the Creation Kit would require an immense team of dedicated modelers, animators, interior/exterior designers, scripters, quest-makers, and many more people to get that done.

I don't want to be a nay-sayer. I'd LOVE to see this made, but getting it done right takes time. Getting a team together would be the hardest part. If you don't believe me, go look at Tamriel Rebuilt. We've got about 65% of it done for the original Gamebyro engine. We started 10 years ago.
