CTD's. Need a way to troubleshoot.

Hi There!

I've run into a problem that's starting to get on my nerves.

I've recently started playing Fallout 4 again after a brief pause and suddenly I've started experiencing CTD's. Not the normal kind when the game just crashes down to desktop but of a more graphical nature.

Now and then, very random, but always whilst in workshop mode my game will freeze. The sounds will continue and when I try to tab out of it the screen turns black and even though i can see the other programs running via the tab-menu I can't seem to get them to overlay the crashed Fallout game. As I watch the Task Manager in the tab-menu I can see that the game is still running, using a fair deal of RAM but nothing odd.

The only way to solve this situation is either reboot or log out from windows and in again.

I've tried using MSI Afterburner to deduce whether it's caused by memory usage, but nothing of the like. The GPU is not overheating and All memtests and Disctests come back showing no kind of errors or warnings.

Currently I have no idea what to do. Since it appears so randomly the classic disable-mods-one-by-one would take a lifetime. Instead I'm looking for any kind of log to enable?

Anyone get any ideas?

I think your problem maybe Afterburner. I've heard that this can cause some problems with games, etc. Start there. If it still messes up, check your load order. I am willing to bet that closing Afterburner will improve game performance.

@SirTwist Thanks for the reply!

As a matter of fact I started using MSI Afterburner after the CTDs started to occur in order to monitor the GPU and Ram usage. Worth a try though to disable it, but not sure it will solve the problem.

I've used LOOT to sort all those million mods :)

But I guess I'd have to manually sort them aswell.

Any debug log to enable? Maybe find out what script or .esp running when the problems occur?

Any universal sort-order i should read?

The AutomatronCountyCrossingFix.esp is no longer needed as that fix has been added to the Unofficial FO4 Patch. When using the SKE versions of the Homemaker patches you mustn't at the same time use the "normal" versions (Greenhouse disabler and Unlocked Institute Objects).

I had a whole lot of problems with the OCDecoratorDLC.esp, but that was around the time both Homemaker and SKE were being updated to v1.40. Nevertheless, I stopped using OCDecorator because of getting Place Everywhere, which suits me better because being way more simple. The latter requires the use of F4SE (Fallout 4 Script Extender; tutorial here).

Should you try Place Everywhere, have a look at Bilago's Configuration Tool; the latter can be set-up to use the F4SE.exe as default launcher, amongst a plethora of other nice tweaks.

Northland Diggers also gave me quite some problems to the point I stopped using the mod. Nothing wrong with Northland, it's just that it must have clashed with some of my other mods (had 255 plug-ins. Now am down to 243)

Then there is the fact that FO4 is so badly optimised that it still has occasional RAM-spikes of over 10GB usage. Loading texture replacers (no plug-ins involved) from Hein84's Vivid series ameliorates things and makes the game more stable.

Also keep in mind that uninstalling mods has an effect on the game, because most mods' influences get baked into the save and can cause a whole bunch of problemos months after having uninstalled them.

As for the rest, well, FO4 has a mind of its own when it comes to crashes, so, I guess we'll have to learn to live with that...

The people behind LOOT keep warning folks not to use MSI Afterburner, but I've been using it for years (on FO4 too, for more than a year now) without any problems whatsoever...

Anyone get any ideas?

i got the same CTD issue around Sanctuary area when running/building constantly, it work fine if i build/running on the inside of Sanctuary, it never happened before, all my settlement mods is claim to adding through script, i use them for a long time without any issues, until now, could be DCMS though.

Or, the long route, hit the blue-ish icon in full editor, in-between the eraser icon and font box. Select spoiler in the pop-up BBCode box and add your text in the text box...

Easy as pie :D

JimmyRJump! Thanks for your reply!

I've now disabled both the CountyCrossingFix.esp aswell as the normal versions of Greenhouse disabler and Institute Objects.

I'm already using the latest F4SE to launch the game via NMM so I think that both OCD and Place Everywhere is working as intended. Will try to disable Northland Diggers and see if that's the problem and I've too experienced those massive RAM-spikes. Luckily for me I have loads of RAM and FO4 usually just use around 4GB, so I've managed to dodge any problems those spikes could've caused.

Whilst I was troubleshooting this problem with Fallout I also went on to see whether it was a hardware problem, so i flashed my BIOS, did a Memtest and a Disctest aswell as cleaning up loads of corrupt regfiles and defragmented. And during the 2 hours playtime I've gotten since I wrote thos post I haven't experienced any CTDs.

My first guess would be the CCleaner clearing so many regfiles and just old shell-files lying around basicly constipating the system.

So @Xheox thats my biggest advice! Download CCleaner and blow out all those old files.

I'll play som more and be back if the problem still occurs.

Thanks for all the support guys!
