Where do the Minutemen fit in the synth debate?

Rebuilding the bloody commonwealth. They don't care if you're a brooding alien as long as you are willing to help with that.

That's not a theme.

They are the people who are just looking out for their homes and neighbors. So i guess the everyman would work.

Then it is a complete waste for them to be a major faction. If they're essentially no different than Diamond City Security as far as their goals are concerned, then what's the point of making them such a huge part of the game?

Except that is their theme. You can't claim "that's not a theme" and pretend it isn't. I suggest you go ask Pagliarulo why he made them a main faction.

Look, you like the Minutemen. I get it! I like them too! They're the real "good guys" of the Commonwealth. They're selfless, they're altruistic, and they're ready at a minute's notice (hence the name) to go out and protect people. I absolutely get that you love the Minutemen!

But that doesn't make the Minutemen have a purpose in the story. Just because you like a character and/or faction doesn't make them necessary to the plot.

Case in point: Most DBZ fans love the Ginyu Force. However, as you can see from 2:23 - 9:14 of this video demonstrates ...

... that alone does not make you crucial to the plot!

I am just telling you what they are and what they want.

The main story would function just as easily without them.

The only contribution they make to the main story is having Mama Murphy tell you to go to Diamond City ... which is indeed a significant contribution, otherwise you'd just be wandering around like an idiot looking for the slightest clue as to Shaun's whereabouts, with no direction whatsoever. Needle in a haystack wouldn't have even began to describe it.

But that could have been anybody! The fact that she was able to tell you that without the Sight means that any citizen of the Commonwealth would have suggested that if they knew your plight. Hell, the citizens of Diamond City themselves will point you to Valentine once they know what you're doing. You could just as easily have gotten that suggestion from Trashcan Carla ... or Trudy at the Drumlin Diner.

The Minutemen have absolutely no bearing on the main plot! They're a violation of Chekhov's Gun!

I never go with the BoS, in fact i only meet them when i destroy the Pridwyn. That makes them just an annoyance and anything but crucial to my story.

Same for the railroad, they are not crucial to the story either:

You are overthinking things.

The main plot is finding your kid.

No, under classic literary structure, Shaun's kidnapping is classified as the "inciting incident." It's not the plot itself.

If that's all the plot were, the main quest would end the minute I reunite with Shaun in the Institute. But the main quest continues after that. So that means there must be more to the plot than that.

Just because you don't interact with them doesn't mean that don't contribute to the story. Both of these factions bring their ideals to the Commonwealth, regardless of your level of interaction with them.

Decoding the courser chip is NOT the only thing the Railroad contributes to the story. That might be the only thing, gameplay-wise, they contribute to the quest line. But the story and the quest line are two different things.

Story-wise, they provide a moral argument to counter the Institute and BOS. This gives them a unique place in the story that nobody else can fill.
