Kayvaan7472
there seems to be quite a lot of texture mods from other games being uploaded so i am confused as what seems to be illegal rips and legal mods.since some of the mods would have been banned in FO3 and FONV but seems to be ok here

nosisab
Many things. sometimes is reusing directly someone's else work or just doing an automatic conversion or porting of it. Sometimes it may be just the use of an image or sound... sometimes... ahhh is whatever they claim is Intellectual property of someone or somewhat (notably seldom the actual author is the owner of the intellectual opus). To reuse assets from another game, or personages from movies or books, make sure to get proper license from the owner/author, just to be on the secure side. Kayvaan7472
so all the textures mods of The Witcher, TERA etc are basically all not allowed?
GMatthews
A lot of models, like the Witcher and Frostmourne, etc, are allowed because they are supposedly original meshes and textures of existing items. If a moddeler creates a new model and texture of Frostmourne, then it is allowed. The trick is if someone says they created new models and textures, how do you prove they didn't? I figure this post was made after the new Tera armor that was released a short time ago. I had the exact same thoughts. Personally, I find it hard to believe the Tera armor was built from scratch but it's not my call to make. Ghogiel
or personages from movies or books, make sure to get proper license from the owner/author, just to be on the secure side. These will almost always fulfil the 4 requirements of the fair use clause in copyright law. The only one that would be put in danger is the 'extent'. If you just whack Darth Vader into a mod, it'll probably pass. But as soon as you devise a mod with a good portion of the characters in A New Hope, and mod a story to match it, the scope changes and the extent you are copying from the IP would probably be too great. Though copyright law is one thing, and the fair use is there to protect hobbyists and fans from having hungry lawyers rip 'em to sreds, the IP holder still reserves the rights to allow anything they want, Games Workshop's official Legal statement on using their IP in game mods asks that you do an entire TC and do not mix their IP into worlds it does not belong, which would surely put it past fair use if it wasn't sanctioned. You can say a lot of bad things abouot GW, especially when you are a rogue trader era like myself, but they love fan art. all the random bolter mods for F3 are technically against their IP usage rights(but are probably still protected as fair use  ) Edited January 18, 2012 by Ghogiel
throttlekitty
I'd like to add that taking someone elses' content, and altering it a little does not exempt something from being a rip. Preparing a ripped model/texture for use in skyrim also does not make you the author, always credit the source.
jimhsu
so all the textures mods of The Witcher, TERA etc are basically all not allowed? Taking a cube and "vertex snapping" it to a wireframe model of the mesh, for instance, would legally be considered original work, though not in spirit. The new reduced poly Frostmourne model would probably satisfy the definition in spirit, though not legally.
