If what they accuse MU of is indeed true, then they should have put them out of business. I hear most of the problem was with Megavideo, where people would upload movies and TV shows that were copyright protected, and Megaupload made no attempts to remove copyrighted material. Youtube on the other hand, people upload copyrighted material all the time, but they also make an effort to remove it when its found, and this is the best they can expect someone to do on the internet. If that were true, how can you explain the: this file has been removed to a copyright complaint that could often be found on megavideo links. In reality the only thing I can see that is different is that google has more staff to deal with this in a particular way, and you can get any regular users account closed or video removed there if you want to troll them hard enough. the other day I saw a user rip a vid off an account, upload it, then report the original authors video and got it removed. I had to laugh at that.

PIPA & SOPA had nothing to do with the take down of Megaupload, Schmitz was a typical criminal DotCom Millionare and it couldn't happen to a nicer person.

Not just that that Guy looked like Goldfinger, he has also Dr.No's cast for Hightec security fortress mansions on islands.

This Guy PAID People to upload content stuff. Ofcourse he was a criminal! Mainfiles werent things like "Audio_Book_Mylittlepet.mp3" or "HolidayPictures.rar", no, the mainfiles were Porn and Music. But our good white-hat Hacker Knights from Anomynous shortly after attacked a few websites, which has absolutly no effect, to fight for more free Porn and Music. And how stupid was Schmitz to don't rent Servers in Russia?

Sometimes i think they should cut the hole freaking entertainment circus off, that the people finaly see how f***ed up they are.

@ Moveing:

I don't know if you're trolling or seriously misinformed, but I'll assume it's the latter, and provide you with this question:

Why are other similar filesharing websites and their owners still not held accountable, if Megaupload's fate was as such?

Because this criminal Schmitz was convicted before, everyone knew that things he is involved are crooked. I knew that crook before for some dot-com frauds and his convictions.

You also can read the indictment

This guy didn't just made no attempts to remove copyrighted material, he paid people to upload Movies, Shows, Music and Porn to Megavideo and Megaupload.

I don't know if you're trolling or seriously misinformed,

But i know you are uninformed.

@ MisInformed:

But other sites also have reward programs for uploading files. And so what if he's convicted before? Cases are completely separate, and in DIFFERENT countries. Unless you're immigrating, your criminal record in other countries is almost but overlooked.

My point is, why Megaupload? There are others, like Filesonic and Fileserve which (no longer) offer rewards programs. Hell, even Megaupload stopped their rewards programs a long time ago.

Why couldn't he get a server in Russia? Simple: click here.

Why Megaupload? Because the guys running it were flaunting their wealth and how it was acquired. They brazenly admitted it was due to piracy, they admitted they were actively involved in it, and admitted they weren't going to do anything about it. Considering everyone in the known universe knew the site was filled with warez none of this should have come as a shock to anyone.

Other sites apparently don't have people in charge who are that colossally stupid and arrogant, so they're not in the same position by a long shot.

I don't think they were arrested for flaunting their wealth, at least not directly. But it drew attention to themselves amidst the huge army of pirates. A dramatic example made out of them was most likely a strategic move for deterence rather than spreading their resources thin (assuming they even have enough) in a neverending fight against piracy. Read the indictment. There is a lot more there than 'just' enabling piracy. One that caught my eye was money laundering - that is taking money that was acquired illegally and could possibly be traced and running it through a quasi legal business and then taking it back out as untraceable. One common way is by transferring it around via wire transfer through multiple internet sites in various countries - buying and selling non existent goods from your self and paying your self with those funds. The amount of each individual transfer is low enough to not attract any attention from the authorities. It is also used to hide money from taxes by moving it around through various countries various companies and various identities.

Another misconception is that SOPA had something to do with the takedown - not so, as the various law agencies involved had been working on this for over two years. Long before SOPA was postponed (it is still not dead!) What it does show is that SOPA, PIPA and other such laws are not really needed at all because we already have plenty of laws that can do what they are supposed to do.
