Saving takes a LONG time

As the title says; lately I have noticed that saving takes an incredibly long time. I have played my current character for ~450 hours and the saves are quite large, ~30,000kb. There's a lot of stuff in there, and I'm guessing this is the cause, however I was just wondering if there's any way(s) to speed up the saving process. I am aware of the Wrye Bash feature of removing bloat from saved games, however I dare not use it as it's supposed to only be used in emergencies, afaik.

I just took a look at my saves, and on a char with almost 300 hrs in my savegame is 6.6mb. Your 30mb seems quite high. Backup your save to be safe, and try the bloat remover. But remember that this is a temporary solution, you still need to find the mod(s) that are causing bloat.

My save time went from nonexistant to a little over a second when i installed Elsweyr and Valenwood Improved together. I suspect that one or both of these mods use a lot of persistant references. I read that these become part of your save. But i like them both too much to uninstall.

That might be not that bad of an idea. My old guy's last save, with well over 1300 hours on it is 5,537 kb. I find that saving, opening the save menu etc. gets slower when I have a lot of saves in my saves folder as well. Periodically I move most out of the saves from that folder into another folder (actually on a different drive on my machine).

If you do give the WB de-bloat a try, I'd make a backup copy of that save that you can use to restore things if they, well you know, go a-Wrye (sorry it's late ... I think I've had a full day 'here at work').

Alright, cheers guys. I AM running a lot of mods. Impressive with such a small size for such a long play session there, Striker. Removing saves to another folder is something I usually do aswell, however I haven't been arsed to do it lately - I'll give it a try. Thanks again guys.

I am probably aided in that by a rather modest mod list ... no big overhauls is likely the 'biggest contributor'.

- Edit - To offer a contrast, my new guy (about 400 hours, with mostly the same mod list) is at 2,555 kb on his latest save.

I suppose it'd only be natural that my files be larger than yours. But 30MB vs 5MB is too much of a gap. There's something fishy going on with my game, no doubt. Probably a ton of the mods I have are causing unnecessary bloat, alas I have no idea which.

The cause of bloating is not the size of the mod but how it works. Mods abusing "place at me" or any other way creating persistent objects are among the main cause.

One single of such mods can do an incredible amount of bloating in seconds if goes astray and loops.

As already stated at the second post, using a bloat remover can be a temporary workaround but the solution is finding the guilt and removing it all together or at least correcting the mod.

Wrye's bash is one the utilities which can be used to perform the cleansing.
