Creation Club for FO4 Poll

  1. 1. When you saw the offerings on the Creation Club for FO4, your response was.... (Pick any number of responses that most mirrors your reaction.)

    • "AIIEEEE!" (Pulls eyes out and drops them into a vat of holy acid.)
    • "What the (deleted) is this (deleted)! What the (deleted) were those (deleted) (deleted) (deleted) thinking?!? (deleted)! (deleted)! (deleted)! (deleted)!"
    • "I TOLD you! What did I tell you would happen? Huh? Huh? Go on, WHAT did I say was going to happen?! For all you believers, here's your plate of crow. Enjoy." Full Disclosure: I (leddBate) was one of the believers.
    • "They can fix this. They can pull this out of the fire. Maybe. I don't know how but... maybe."
    • "Whine, whine, whine. Complain, complain, complain. Stop being such grump-meisters. Give Bethesda a chance to do better. It's early days yet."
    • "Meh. So what?"
    • "Eh, a bit pricey but whatever... That can change later."
    • OMG! This will eventually clog my drive and probably wreck my save game!

Yes, this is a FO4 only subject matter... -at the moment. But I wanted Skyrim players who may not have heard the news (consisting mainly of agonized wailing, outraged shouting, and groans of disbelief) to get some idea of what is most likely coming their way. The poll is for people who want to vent but don't have enough time to post (or don't trust themselves to post on this subject without descending into language that might get them in trouble.)

So, if you're a FO4 player, you've probably already seen the unveiling of the 'Creation Club'. If not, prepare to be... underwhelmed. And insulted. And contemptuous. And... well, I think you get the idea. Rather than bore you with my droning, pedantic dialogue (and grammar bad enough to cause heart-failure in an English teacher) I will instead refer you to acknowledged experts in the field of games and let them fill you in on all the bad news...

Gopher: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciSAyylZjfM
I don't believe I've EVER heard Gopher so... exasperated over a subject. And if you've watched Gopher's videos, you know he's a person who is hard to frustrate. Gopher's analysis of what Bethesda must have been thinking is both in the realms of "laugh-out-loud" and "cringe-worthy" when you realize that he's right. Bethesda must really have thought this was "a good idea".

EDIT: And here's his more in-depth, analytical review why the Creation Club is NOT going to succeed (after he got over his initial reaction in the above video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FR58zYL2Jw

Jim Sterling: Not linked.
I'm not linking to Jim's video because you KNOW what kind of language he uses. I don't have a problem with that myself, but I don't want to link directly to it from the forums here. Not that it's hard to find his videos, right? Anyway, as you can imagine, Jim goes straight for the jugular vein with his pronouncement of: "It's not 'paid mods' or 'microtransactions', it's BOTH!" I also loved it when he labled Bethesda as "Bethetic".

SidAlpha: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4-mwtrWft8
Sid gets into the nuts-n-bolts issues with the mods from Creation Club and, oh boy, is it very, VERY bad news. Even if he's wrong on some of the issues, what is confirmed so far will have you recoiling from the thought of letting a Creation Club mod anywhere NEAR your save when it's Skyrim's turn. Just a few of the alarming thoughts: Mods pre-loaded onto your computer from the Creation Club (but not activated until you 'buy' them) -whether you want them or not. Mods in the Creation Club causing your free mods to fail to load. Mods being forced to load in alphabetical order, which can cause mods to break due to some mods needing to be loaded after others to function properly.

EDIT: Here's another video from Gopher: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcldh21R40M
This video spells out the problems rather plainly about the Creation Club downloading files onto your HD or SSD, whether you want them or not. Because, unless Bethesda changes the CC soon, it will PATCH those files into your game. It's not optional. You can't have a functional FO4 (and eventually Skyrim) without those files. As Gopher says: "This isn't the end of modding, but it MIGHT be the end of Fallout 4."

EDIT: And here's a video from Gopher to soothe the fears of the paranoid (like myself) about what will happen to modding in general. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z4FDHXHSUs

Okay, I'll try NOT to edit this post any further...

IMPORTANT EDIT: (And now I have to break my semi-promise above.) Bethesda patched FO4 so that the CC mods are no longer pre-loaded onto PCs. Consoles are (presumably) still stuck with it. Skyrim's CC has launched with this change already in place. So at least we (PC users) are not getting files we don't need/want shoved down our throats.

There's a lot more videos out there, but I think these have pretty well covered the scope of the utter train-wreck (not just MY opinion) that is the Creation Club. I dunno. Maybe Bethseda can pull this out of the fire by releasing real DLC-type content quickly. But I doubt it. I have to agree with Gopher, Jim and Sid. This is probably the final nail in the 'Paid Mods' endeavor. I mean, the three of them AGREE that this is highly likely. Think about that. All three of them agree about this. That's really bad news for Bethesda and the Creation Club.

Mmmmm, you know, this crow doesn't taste half-bad...

I'm open to suggestions for more answers on the poll. Obviously, I'm a bit biased on this subject. But I'd welcome good alternatives answers. (Or even questionable alternate answers...)

Well, to me, whether it's underwhelming or not wll take time, and it'll be up to modders who participated.. not Bethesda. There really isn't much they themselves can do that they haven't already done (as far as presentation goes, etc). Sure, they could have waited long enough for a big project to come out, but why? It's a fairly old game and all they needed to do is provide some infrastructure and new menus. It works... now it's up to others to make use of it or not.

edit: BTW, I've never even played modded Fallout... except for the unofficial FO3 patch and Windows live disabler. lol. So I don't care about this specifically either way. I'll have to wait and see for Skyrim, where I'm more interested.

Just "meh" for me. While it's nice that the PS4 users will get additional content, it sucks that they're going to have to pay for it, when everyone else can get these things for free.

Aside from that, regarding my own potential purchases, I'll just have to wait to see what's on offer. If something looks really fabulous, I might just purchase it. However, I'm not the type of modder to add a bunch of content into my game. At the moment, the only standalone pieces of equipment I have are Skyforge Weapons and Shield, even as I use a bunch of other mods to change things in the game. Most of the weapons and so on aren't going to be of interest to me when I can already get fabulous, lovingly-crafted models for free, but (currently) choose not to use them. If they actually add big questing content, then I might seriously consider it. Even then, I'll wait for reviews and for bugfix patches.

I'm gonna add something slightly related, but the fact that youtubers are complaining is hilarious to me. Those guys make far more cash than any modder.. but apparently want everyone else to behave like communists.

They're not all that way, though. Gopher's focuses, not on the monetary aspect of it, but the fact that the whole thing was executed horribly by Bethesda. He feels that they learned absolutely nothing at all from the old Horse Armor fiasco, even as they make fun of themselves with the Horse Power Armor. Bethesda marketed CC as unique, curated content, and they roll-out with a currently-available power armor, along with some Pip-Boy reskins and other lame offerings.

Jim Sterling is exactly right: it's Bethetic. They haven't shown the players that these things are worth spending real money on.

The more I learn about the Craptation, pardon, I meant 'Creation' Club, the more I am becoming alarmed at the possible future of Skyrim. Please see Gopher's newest video (I linked it in an edit to my original post above) about just how very, very bad this is. It's not just a matter of clogging your HD or SSD with files you have no intention of using... -No, it's also about patch updates that might start occurring on a monthly, weekly or even daily basis. Which means your executables for FO4 and Skyrim will be altered. Which (for LE Skyrim at least) means your script extenders stop working properly until they're updated. Do you think we'll see weekly (or even monthly) updates of script extenders for our games?

There's a reason why the internet seems to be gearing up to stomp Bethesda in the PR department as much as it can. And that reason is that the Creation Club is priming itself to wreck our modded games, whether you give a crap about the CC or not.

UPDATE: Bethesda has removed (via a patch for FO4) the requirement that the mod's files be pre-loaded onto your PC's HD. Skyrim's CC has apparently launched with this change already in effect. I still don't like the Creation Club, but I got to give Bethesda kudos for actually responding to fan input (read: screaming) with a change to the CC for the better.
