CTD when engaging in combat.

Recommended Posts

K, I recently bought the latest version of Fallout 4, and thus had to re-install all my mods. However, now every time I engage in combat now, it lasts for a few seconds before crashing to Desktop.

This is my current load order as it stands now.

Now, I can do many other things in the game for many hours, and can even complete some quests as long as I run from all combatants, but that is one of the funner things to do in the game, I would rather not lose that ability, any suggestions.

Wow ... you are missing another 500 mods in your list ... lol ... well, sorry but even if you learn how to patch your game via F4edit, you still will have CTD because it has been advised from the WOTC's author, that CTD will happen by using that mod. The only way to avoid them is to access the cell where you are getting the CTD, from different direction but if your CTD's are happening as soon as you are getting in combat ( everywhere ), then I guess your problem is not just related to WOTC but to the heavy amount of mods in your game and that probably, they are conflicting to each other ....

.... you are posting your problem but you do not give any information about how powerful your rig is to handle such amount of mods, etc, etc, etc, ..... when a CTD happens, there might be dozens of reasons that are causing them, and they could be triggered perhaps because you are running something in the background, anti-virus software running, perhaps your rig is not that powerful, load order, too many mods conflicting to each other, lack of cleaning the master files, etc, etc.

... this game only support ( I think - and I have not even tried it ... ) 250 mods and I do not know how many you have in your list but my head is spinning when I see your list .... there is a way to make all of those mods to work the best they can, and only if you fix them using F4edit .... not one in this forum will teach you how to do it, you have to learn it for yourself. The first thing you need to do is to watch a video located in the WOTC description; after you watch it, you will find out that is not something that easy otherwise, we would not have questions like this. Learning how to patch a game is something not that simple and it will take you a while to learn it, probably months before you know it like the palm of your hand.

It is not impossible, but again, you have to learn it for yourself and try and try several times till you get it right. Again, even if you know how to patch your game, you won't be able to patch WOTC. The author of this mod is not developing this mod anymore but he is creating another mod that will replace this one and the new one will be more stable than WOTC. The new one will be ready probably by the end of the year.

I do have WOTC in my load order and I do not have any CTD at all .... but .... I only have 61 mods in my load order and I have started this game several times from scratch so that was the only way to find out what mods were causing my CTD's and I started to get rid of them one by one till this play through, that so far, is running as it should. My approach to play this game is based on simplicity : if I want to be in combat via WOTC ( and I believe that without this mod, this game is boring ) then I needed to get rid of some heavy mods that probably will conflict or over stress my rig to the point of crashing my game ... my game is not patched because again, that is something ( for now ) that I have not been able to learn how to work with. Good luck.

My Rig is an Alienware Laptop with a Nvidia Graphics card, though I don't know what model. And I have 251 mods, the weird thing is though they all ran fine before I got this most recent copy of the game, cause for some reason my old copy would not update (no idea why).

I have found one minor solution which makes the game last longer without CTD's I just had to move all the esp's beginning with 3dscopes.esp and ending with Craftable Armor Size - Fix Material Requirements.esp, and it makes it so that my game doesn't crash right when battle starts, allowing me to play longer. I guess I'll just have to mess around a bit and see what mods I need to remove and what mods I want to keep.

I've never had a laptop so they never called my attention and I heard too many times people saying that laptops are not the best device to play a game, especially, when the game has been heavily modded. I think that you have answered your own question here.

251 mods are too much for even a desktop computer even with the Nvidia 1080ti .... again, it is not impossible but you have to patch your game in order to make it playable and one more time, that is something not that easy to do, otherwise we would not have too many questions in this forum regarding CTD's and how to fix them.

Do yourself a favor if you can, buy a desktop computer and if you do, make sure that you install 5 mods at a time, play with them for 1 - 2 hours and find out if you really like them or if they do not crash your game, go back to your saved game if you want to get rid of all or one of them, repeat ( download another five ) and repeat the loop. That way it is easier to find out which ones do you really like and which ones are causing issues, but if you download all of them at the same time, trust me, you will never be able to know which ones are causing the problem.

BTW, Scrap Everything is a mod that must be placed at the bottom of the load order. I think that you are not reading the mod description and posts. If you do not follow the author's recommendations about compatibility and load order, you won't be able to have kind of stable game. Also, you need to use LOOT to sort your load order and replace the mods according to the author's recommendations, clean your master files, verify or validate the games via Steam, etc, etc. ..... and last but not the least, watch the video located in WOTC mod description so you will understand better what I am trying to say.

Good luck.

I had read the mod descriptions, twice in fact, but this thread is irrelevant now as I have reduced my load order a bit more, 218 in fact, which has increased the amount of time I can battle in combat to over two hours now. Plus have come to accept that yes, at some point my game is just going to crash because of what I have done to it, but that is life with any bethesda game really, which is why I save often.

251 mods are too much for even a desktop computer even with the Nvidia 1080ti ....

I ran the game fine with 467 mods of which 255 had a plug-in. It all depends on what kind of mods and on which rig. Not that I have the most powerfull machine in the world, mind (i7-3770K on an AsRock Z77 Extreme11 motherboard with 16GB KHX RAM and an AMD MSI RX470 8GB GamingX)

@regwald:

Try LOOT to sort your load order and have a look at ENBoost to see if the game crashes less when allocating some system memory to the game because with FallOut 4 a lot of issues come from not having enough RAM since the game used to gobble-up up to 10GB, which had, well, RAMifications.

Laptops can be okay for gaming, but I won't advise it for temperature reasons. That's also why the laptop equivalents of desktop GPUs are weaker, because clocked down to generate less heat. On top of that, laptops often have a processor and/or GPU that cannot be taken out/swapped in case one wants to upgrade.

Also, when posting a phonebook worth of mods, please use "spoiler" tags

Knew I was forgetting some steps, as I said before I had to re-install everything, and thus forgot a few steps when updating everything. That, and I also had to switch from Mod Organizer to Nexus Mod manager because sadly, the current Mod Organizer for Fallout 4 just does not work. I'll check ENB Boost to see if that helps any (I remember it helping a bit, but it's been ages,) and I'll Run Loot to see if that helps at all.
