Game won't start after forced Steam update

So I went to open Skyrim after playing intensely last night without any problems and Steam informed me an update was installing. When it finished the game would not start.

Has anyone else experienced this and as I have no backup, is there any solution other than to reinstall the game and start over from scratch?

What was the update for?

I have no idea. There's no info available as far as I'm aware.

I should be a little more clear, however. The starting screen opens and I hit Play. I am then offered the option to Continue last game or Load a previous game or Start a new game. No matter what I select I get an instant CTD.

I've just been on Steam Community and it appears I'm not alone. Bethesda have broken the game and SKSE64 no longer works either (I don't have it anyway so it's not down to that).

I would say that this is bad business policy on Bethesda's part, but they clearly don't care. I love the fact that I pay full price for a product only to have it "fixed" ie. BROKEN by its creator repeatedly while it is in my possession. Just awesome, par for course for this crap they are selling us--they piss on us and call it rain, whatever!

Skyrim Special Edition 1.1 Update (All Platforms Unless Otherwise Noted)

Fixes

General performance and optimization improvements
Fixed rare issue with NPCs not appearing in proper locations
Fixed an issue with interface elements not appearing correctly on certain displays (Xbox One and PS4 only)
Fixed issue with saves erroneously being marked as Modded, even though no mods are active
Updated some sound files to not use compression

They forgot to add "Fixed an issue where the game would actually start and perform normally" ..... BASTARDS!!!

I have ALL of my games EXCEPT Bethesda games set to high priority update :D

This means that I am STILL playing on the same files for Fallout 4 and Skyrim from BEFORE creation club went live

Yay me :)

As long as I have another game that needs to update , FO4 and Skyrim will NEVER update lol, thank god I own DayZ and ARK also lol :P

It's updated to 1.5.16

I can launch it, but SKSE64 2.0.4 doesn't run with it.

That's the notice about the first update, last year. There's no notice there about 1.5.16 (yet)
