16olivece
So I decided to uninstall Skyrim Special Edition through steam to remove it from my system drive. I reinstalled it on an external hard drive, and the game works. Before testing out the game, I spent hours downloading mods manually through Nexus's mod page. I placed them all inside steamapps> common> Skyrim Special Edition> Data. I also decided to create a new folder inside of "Data" called "Mods" and folders inside that one for each mod to keep things organized if i decided to delete one. I extracted the mods into those separate folders inside of Data> Mods> Folder (name of mod). Once all the mods were extracted, I attempted to play the game. The vanilla game itself works just fine, but not a single mod of mine is working. I tried trouble shooting my issue by going into my Steam Library, right clicking the game, properties> local files> verify integrity of game files (they were fine). I was looking for Cache (or somthing like that) in local files but its not there. I downloaded Nexus Mod Manager and tried to manually select my mods from my files (the folders were there but they were all empty?? even though when I into the file folder on my computer the files are clearly there.) I tried looking for clues in the launcher options and inside the game's main menu after you hit play. I don't know anything about load order, but i doubt it even matters if the game cant find my files. I tried installing Skyrim script extender (its on both my steam account in my main drive on my computer, and in the folder im playing from on my external hard drive) but when i go to install it, it cant find my Skyrim Install Directory. So i try to direct it and it cant find the skyrim.exe file (I have a SkyrimSE.exe im my Skyrim Special Edition folder). For now i have it installed in Skyrim Special Edition> Skyrim> SKSE (a folder i made to keep organization) I've watched youtube tutorials on how to install mods and I'm pretty sure im doing it right. Im so confused, can someone explain why it wont work.????
ymf331
most mods would be added directly to 'data', so putting them in a subdirectory wouldn't do anything. i don't use nmm personally, as i prefer mod organizer, but i'd imagine that it works the same way, in that you'd install the compressed file. with skse, it should include a scripts folder, which goes inside 'data', as well as files that go directly into 'skyrim'. that and enb are the things i can think of that you absolutely must install manually. it's another case where putting the decompressed files in a subdirectory was the wrong idea. there is a separate forum for skyrim se, but i'd imagine that the basics of modding are similar. in any case there are some guides here as well that might help you at least get started. Jeir
Excuse the list, I find it easier than paragraphs. That said: - Skyrim Special Edition forums are found here.- Mods for SSE are found here. While many mods for SK work in SSE, many need porting via the SSE CK, and some meshes/textures may require conversion/optimisation. Mods that require SKSE will not work yet.- If installing manually, mods go into Skyrim Special Edition/Data. Open pretty much any mod archive and you'll find various folders (/meshes, /textures, /sound etc.) or an archive (.bsa) and probably a plugin (.esp/.esm). Those are what go into /Data. If they aren't put in /Data in the correct directories, the game can't find them.- SKSE on Steam is for the Legendary/'Oldrim' Skyrim only. That is why it couldn't find the .exe it wanted (because you have SSE installed). SKSE64 for SSE is available but still in alpha.- NMM/MO are not being worked on any more, and are well known for being buggy. Try using Wrye Bash as an alternative mod installing/managing tool.- Gopher is probably the most well-known person for tutorial videos. I don't know if he has SSE-specific content (I don't watch any modding videos), but modding SK and SSE is the same; you just need to replace SK mods with SSE ones, or understand that SSE may not have the particular SK mod he's talking about. 16olivece
Well now I have a new problem. I plugged my external hard drive into my computer, but I cant play the game anymore. It worked when i first installed the game onto it. Now it wants me to install it again? Is it not possiable to play the game from an external hard drive? Does it HAVE TO be on my computer? Does unplugging and re plugging the hard drive mess up some kind of data pathing?? The reason why Im trying to do this is because i want to play the game (with mods) but i've been struggling with storage issues, and mods take up A LOT of space. I highly doubt that the mods will work on my external hard drive if the vanilla game is installed on my computer's drive. ymf331
i'd think it would work fine if you installed steam on the external hard drive. if not, i guess you could always keep the base game on your c drive, and just install mod organizer on the external drive where all your mods would be kept with it. 16olivece
Don't mods have to go into the Data folder of the game though? I know that i can download Nexus Mods Manager on my external hard drive and still use it. But i assume what will happen is that Nexus will store my mods in the folder on the computer, not in some kind of special folder on the external drive. And if that happens, then i'm just using up space again. Which just brings me back around to my second problem of the game wanting me to reinstall it, which doesn't make sense because the launcher is IN the same folder as all the game's data. Do you suppose that the game isn't working because steam is on my computer and the game is on the drive? If so, what would happen to the other steam games i have on my computer drive. Will they still work if steam is on the external drive? Or does everything have to be on the same drive, external or not? -i'm sorry my questions are difficult, and i'm probably being a pain in the butt. I appreciate your feedback. Kroekr
When you installed it to your external drive, did you make a new shortcut from the external drive?
16olivece
If you mean shortcut on my desk top then yes. However, both that shortcut and the launch file inside the Skyrim Special Edition folder prompt me to reinstall it. I don't want a dozen copies of the skyrim folder on my external drive every time i want to play the game. Kroekr
Does your external drive still have the same drive letter (D:, E:, F:) as it did when you installed there? If a thumb drive 'stole' the designation, that could be your problem. As far as SKSE goes, are you using the 64 bit version? It is still in alpha (or beta, can't remember which). 16olivece
No, my external drive has been "F" through the entire process. I'm not really sure what you mean by 64 bit version. Also, I think you're thinking of beta (the version of the official release). My version is of the fully developed game.
