New GPU

Recommended Posts

Good news everyone! my Radeon HD 7950 is dying honorably after 6 years of service.

My mother bord http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H61M-DGS/

This is my card https://www.amazon.com/XFX-Double-2XMiniDP-Graphics-FX795ATDKC/dp/B00E0GYN1W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1513007357&sr=8-1&keywords=XFX+Double+D+HD+7950

Obviously I need a new GPU, I want something with good performance so I can run the next Beth game and 7 days to die. My budget is $400, I can't go over 11" long.

I'm thinning of this card to replace it. https://www.amazon.com/XFX-1386Mhz-Graphic-Cards-RX-580P8DFD6/dp/B06Y66K3XD/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1513005477&sr=1-1&keywords=rx+580+8gb&refinements=p_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A6066318011

Opinions advice?

RX 580's are tough to get because they're cryptocurrency miners take them all. And if you can find one, they're usually ridiculously overpriced (MSRP at launch was $230-ish) And it's like that for all the AMD GPU's at the moment. If you're not opposed to nvidia GPU's, you might want to consider a GTX 1060.

Also, you didn't list your CPU. I can tell by your motherboard chipset that it's a Sandy Bridge Intel. Which one do you have exactly?

My CPU is a i5-3570K @ 3.40GHz.

I have no real plans of getting a nvidia card even if it's cheaper. The game works affair and other similar actions have left me hating nvidia with a passion.

As far as I have found the 580 and 1060 are about the same performance wise, unless one is better at fallout 4. The 580 is $290 (comes with quake) on newegg well the 1060 is $280 newegg.

These are the 3 cards I have narrowed it down to. My budget is now only $320 (damn lack of early winter work).

Most expensive 8 Gigs ram and alows SLI (maybe one day i might use SLI) but pushes my 500 watt PSU to the limit

Cheaper 6 gigs ram, no SLI and my PSU will handle it np.

Vary cheep Only 3 gigs ram, no SLI, PSU will handle it np.

I only ever use 1 monitor at 1080, I do not own a VR head set (Yet?) and my old Radeon HD 7950 died this morning so I'm using my motherboards integrated graphics now. I am considering nvidia cards dew to high praise of other users and fund/power constants.

I highly suggest you save up some extra money and just buy a GTX 1070. It will blow away that RX 580 and will serve you well for a very long time. It falls very well into your original budget of $400 USD. The EVGA SC Gaming model also fits just under that 11" limit you have.

If not, then I guess the GTX 1060 3GB is your best value per dollar spent at this point at $200 USD.

A nice dual fan GTX 1060 6GB is a bit more at around $270 USD. In my opinion, it's not really worth it at that price in comparison to the 3GB model. If it was closer to $230 then it would be, but it's not right now.

I have decided to go with the GTX 1060 3 gig https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814126133

The rX 580 price jumped to $450 last night and the 1060 is still on sale at $208. I could what save up for the 1070 or even a 1080 but I really want my gaming rig back and fully operational. Since I'm moving from a 7950 with one working fan this should be a nice performance boost all the same.

Thank you all for your advice. Now for the funeral arrangements for my 7950
