Honest Hearts was a big letdown

HH was the only DLC I missed, no particular reasons, but I recently bought and finished it... and I'm very disappointed.

The burned man.

I can understand he decided to "let pass" and forget the Mojave, and go back to live his old life, but they exaggerated with the religion obsession.

They should have limited the religious thing to when you talk to him about his past, but they actually made him into a religious fanatic, he quotes/mentions god every other sentence.

Plus christianism doesn't really fit tribals nor it is new or interesting to hear in a game, I expected a lot of shamanism and rituals.

The good thing about NV compared to F3 is that no one is completely good or bad.

Everyone has shades of both. Everyone can be interpreted in different ways.

But Graham and even Daniels are so dull and uninteresting.

Missions are very limited as well, I think I invested 2-3 times the time in Dead Money compared to HH.

The main quest is boring, failed to make me feel remotely involved and has too many fetch quests.

Nothing is memorable in HH, even F3 characters are more interesting.

Heck it feels like Beth made this DLC, not Obsidian.

Dead Money was much better :/

I'll agree to disagree. :)

I find Dead Money to be extremely frustrating. The fog and all those locked gates (with keys on the OTHER side), plus "hunt the radio / speaker" is just ridiculous after a while.

Joshua Graham, according the biography on Nukapedia, was a missionary first, and only became Caesar's Legate out of loyalty and necessity (helped the Black Legs defeat the other tribes and became the Legion) He thought he's helping to create a society of equals. It didn't turn out that way. So it makes sense that when he was all but killed by Caesar he'll return to the Utah and take up religion again. He basically hates himself for being made a tool of Caesar and is trying to redeem himself by saving the tribes he's allied with.

I agree that there should be a bit more about him, but that'd be kinda boring and break up the game play.

I do agree that HH is the less enjoyable DLC, both the questline plots and the disappointment of Joshua Graham who did not live up too his potential at all. I do enjoy the environment and the quests would be fine as sub quests but I really do feel like It was not worth the money for it, especially compared too the other three storylines.

Now I do understand the reason they went the missionaire route with Graham and all that was a parody on the 1700-1800 western expansion and how strong religious beliefs would not only survive but likely thrive in patchs acrossed the pre war world. I just dont think making the quests the main questline in the DLC was really a good idea as it should have been sub plots tieing into a larger plot maybe that lead up too salt lake city or some such.

I liked HH for the Survivalists story as that was probably one of the best bits of writing in the FO canon. Discovering his various cache locations and journal entries made HH the more intriguing than the main quest line which is to either run from or fight the white legs.

Quick question-Why do you use Nukapedia?

Honest Hearts was quite... boring... to say the least. But I'm not complaining after the steam summer sale, got NV and all the DLCs for cheap. I like the story behind Joshua somewhat but the location seems a bit bland. There's not much going on other than tribals trying to kill each other, and a few Yao Guai roaming around. I have to say I was in it for the Desert armor and the survivalist rifle.

And there was something else that really annoyed me. Getting shot all the time with tribals wielding Anti-Material rifles! I mean I can understand them using pistols and ordinary rifles but an Anti-Material rifle just seems wrong! Almost every other tribal group I encountered carried one and usually gave me a lot of butt ache. Is this some sort of level scaling thing that Bethesda put in the game?

I'll be one of the first to say that Honest hearts didn't have the quality of the other DLCs, but I still found it enjoyable. As mentioned, the story of the Survivalist is great and one of the best bits of storytelling hidden in the background that I've ever seen. I think that Joshua's religious devotion was an intentional thing as part of his character, given his background and near death experience. The developers also noted that Christianity was not something the tribals have taken to entirely, with one side quest actually letting you undergo their "Rite of Passage" by being put under the influence of the Shaman's drugs and having to kill a giant Yao-Guai. Also, were you looking at the environments in the Park? The whole point of making the DLC was probably to let the developers make something that beautiful!

Try Honest Hearts for the first time. Impressions:

- Honest Hearts is ideal for a low level character. A good lock pick level, a gun with scope and you are free to join in. Most of the door is openable with Lp50, and the wide open map make good use of the scope. Varmint Rifle should be enough.

- The awesomely fast respawn rate of plants in Honest Heart make for good harvesting experience. Explore in safety and harvest all you see.

- The bloody expensive shops in HH is the same as shops every in main game at early level where you dont get faction discount yet. If you go HH later, the expensive price will throw you off, what with the massively discounted rate of primm and novac.

- Desert suit and Survivalist Rifle are just plump.

All in all it's recommended that you try HH around lv10-15. No later.

EDIT: Complete it. More impressions:

- Limited shops. Limited ammo type. So if you plan to use some ammo other than .45 and 12.7mm, dedicated your inventory to bring it with you. Because I dont think Joshua refresh his inventory. On the other hand, you probably can find enough cells and material to make energy cells.

I admit, I turned on gm for a while on Dead Money, and used mods that didn't take your equipment, but I enjoyed it the most of the DLC's. OWB seemed to not fit the lore too much, but I loved it and it was a nice throwback to 80's and 90's movies. Lonesome road (Which I haven't completed) seemed good, with tonnes of new content (but with a huge and welcome difficulty curve). But honest hearts was a fetch quest that lasted me 1-2 hours with barely any new content besides the .45 Auto.
