nanonarcissus Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Hey guys, my modded Fallout 3 keeps crashing and I could really use some help. Essentially, the game starts up fine but won't go longer than 30 minutes without crashing. Sometimes it's as soon as I load a save, other times it can be just wandering around or loading a new area, but it commonly crashes at the start of a fight. Usually ones with multiple enemies. I think I've followed all the installation guides etc correctly. I run Fallout through FOSE and installed everything through the Nexus Mod Manager, not FOMM. I'm running with an overclocked i7 processor & GTX 580 on medium/high settings, so I don't think it's a hardware issue. And I've uninstalled all my mods + Fallout and reinstalled them with no change, so I'm a bit stumped. What makes me suspect the problem might be FWE is that the game crashes instantly, every time, whenever I attempt the alternate start. Other elements of FWE seem to be working, but every other time it crashes it will usually work fine after a restart or two. The alternate start is the only thing I absolutely cannot get to work. I'm also pretty sure the problem is not WMK, because this was already going on before I installed that and I haven't noticed a change since. Overcast73 Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 I just recently upgraded my video card to a GTX550i I didn't crash much - until then. All other games seem to work just fine. I do run FWE, but I didn't start running it until after my video card upgrade, so I can't say it's FWE at all. Personally, I think it's something with the GTX5xxx cards and Fallout 3 specifically. I notice many of my crashes come when there's a sudden change in the graphics - like panning to see the skyline and the bloom/HDR kicking in, or maybe when entering new cells. I'm working on a mod and it crashes there too - of course, I don't have the level optimized, but I can be just loading into a cell that's 100% nothing but terrain and it'll crash. It's not consistent, so I really doubt it's my mod - there's so little to the mod so far - nothing but a worldspace + some objects. No custom scripts, few NPC's, no custom items so far. And that's a 100% vanilla fallout 3 install I use for modding - no FWE or anything at all. Just FO3, the DLC's, and my mod.
M48A5 Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Fallout 3 does not like multicore processors. Have you limited your CPU to only two cores? Is your game installed outside program files? Are you running FOMM as administrator? Also, the installation instructions for FWE states it need FOMM for proper installation. There are a lot of people that have found that using FOMM instead of NMM for the Fallout series works better.
prensa Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 nanonarcissus - Hello! I've seen reports of freeze & CTD's with the alternate start to FWE before. I think it's often put down to the Fallout 3 multi core bug as the alternate start is in a small space which tends to bring out the multi core bug. Does the game freeze, locking up & then CTDing? As M48A5 said Fallout 3 has trouble with multi core computers, mainly with ones that have more than two cores & use hyperthreading. You say you've got an i7 so that affects you. There is a fix, you need to edit your Fallout 3 .ini file. The one you want to change is: For XP: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3\ For Vista & Win7: Documents\My Games\Fallout3 The file you want will be called: FALLOUT.ini Open the .ini with Notepad & change this line: bUseThreadedAI=0 to: bUseThreadedAI=1 & insert this line under it: iNumHWThreads=2 That sorts out the freezing bug. Save & close your ini. Also, your load order has a few unneeded MMM plugins. The Mart's Mutant Mod - FWE Master Release.esp that you are using already includes these: Mart's Mutant Mod - Tougher Traders.espMart's Mutant Mod - Natural Selection.espMart's Mutant Mod - Master Menu Module.esp So you need to untick & remove them. Hope this helps! Prensa
Saja Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Hi there,i just wanna give a Hint that Could Help all Core i Series Users. My Fallout also Crashed many times, and i Serached Very Long for a solution, and now i found one who Really Works but its Kinda annoying. When you Disable the Hyper Threading Feature it Runs Perfect ;)
MichikoUnknownFox Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Here are a few things I noticed from my experiences with FWE so far: You're running the big mods (FWE + WMK + MMM) without the interoperability patches. When the game has a lot of conflicts, it's more likely to crash. The patches will reduce those significantly. Make sure you aren't running a timescale mod, or setting the timescale yourself before FWE can set it for you. FWE has its own timescale setting and for some reason it causes the game to crash.
