Alduin is just taking the piss now...

So I stop at the inn in Kynesgrove, mainly because it's the closest fast travel point I have to where I needed to go. Well, also because it's as good as any to reload my main weapon: Vilja. You know, put five rounds of mead into her, and leave the sixth chamber empty for safety reason

Anyway, there's not one but TWO ancient dragons overhead killing every frikken named character there, and a THIRD circling that dragon wall to the south of Kynesgrove. And by now it's not even the first time -- and Talos knows it probably won't be the last -- that I run into pairs of dragons laying waste to everything in sight.

And I know this is Skyrim, but I kinda grew fond of still having SOME named characters left in it

Is it level dependent or something? Or does the game ramp up the attacks if I go too many days without ending Alduin? Or, really, any idea what am I doing wrong?

I guess it must be some SE thing, though. I don't remember them attacking in pairs in the old skyrim, except for a scripted place or two. I mean, consecutive, yes, but not at the same time.

Maybe a mod you have that added more encounters? Dragons aren't actually that frightening in Skyrim. They don't really chase you non-stop for hours (like in Everquest). The game forces them to fly around once in a while. So you can consider your dragon encounter more of an immersion/RPG thing. And in that sense, you won the jackpot :)

As for dragons killing your NPCs, may I suggest Run For Your Lives by Arthmoor.

I think Moraelin knows. He/she has been around. But good suggestion though, a simple mod but very effective. It beats me going around `resurrect everyone. Well, I supposedly don't care about unessential NPCs dying (because I can't be everywhere to protect everyone) but Skyrim is already lacking in population (the game, not the world), I wouldn't want a named NPC, like an old lady just die, I lose immersion :) Guards can die, and I hope they do respawn. It is immersive to see more than just us (the player and his/her team) attempt to fight dragons. It doesn't mean guards know how to fight dragons, but there is no stopping them attempting to do their job and die trying.

Anyway, Moraelin, the dragon hype should die down right? Don't tell me you keep on having dragon attack every 5 minutes now. Sometimes I feel I need a dragon attack that I have to console command spawn a dragon out to disturb a peaceful village, a dramatical twist.

I had multiple dragons a few times in Oldrim, it's nothing new. Run For Your Lives is good. I also recommend Dawnguard Sentries Plus.

How good is Dawnguard Sentries plus? I know it adds a few guard NPC that looks awesome (and probably with better stat). The description of the mod is a bit confusing. I guess what I am trying to avoid is having too many non-uniformed NPCs posing as guards running around. Guards in standardized issued uniforms = military force. Dawnguard sentries = looks like they use their own gear = mercenary force.

But nice find, I never knew this one exists. I am going to try it.

Well, yeah, I know about Arthmoor's mod and I wouldn't play without it. Thing is, though, it's still not 100% effective against a determined onslaught of dragons. As the mod's page notes, it's dicey to determine that a dragon attack is underway. Most of the time it can't get the game to say that there's an attack in progress in the cell, until the dragon lands. As in, on the ground or a roof. Strafing runs from the air don't even count as a proper dragon attack most of the time. Plus there's the issue when the dragon lands on the inn, and people try to run and take cover in the same inn, while the dragon is belching elemental death at the street in front of it.

Basically the mod helps. A LOT. It saved countless NPC lives. But occasionally someone still bites the dust, and if you keep throwing hundreds of dragons at them, it's basically a war of attrition that the NPCs can't win.

And about it dying down, nah, it just drove me to the point where, combined with the increasing terrain and navmesh problems I was having, it just made me delete all the old saves and start completely fresh. Really, my game was running off the tracks fast. In retrospect, I wish I had at least taken a screenshot of how many hundreds of dragons I had killed up to that point, so people could know what I was talking about. Literally as soon as I fast travelled anywhere -- and I don't mean long travels; from Dragonsreach to the Whiterun stables was enough -- most dragon spawn points in the game would have one or two dragons already going berserk.

Seems tame after the restart, but then my character is only like level 20 so far. Probably half of it just on account of how fast Light Armor skill goes up when everyone on the map is trying to give you a new haircut with a battle axe

I suppose in the old game my deactivating a couple of mods mid-game might have brought *ahem* the blessing of Sheogorath upon the game's scripts or something...
