TheDeadTree
For all you classic Adventure games fans out there, the genre took yet another blow this week. LucasArts plainly deceided that once again they'd rather rush out another lame Star Wars title (SW: Battlegrounds, Force Commander) then something with abit of substance. They cancelled Sam and Max 2: Freelance Police. What am I talking about? Check out the trailer for the now dearly departed game: here. Last year they also cancelled the sequel to Full Throttle, as well. At this point, it looks like there will never be a Monkey Island 5, or god forbid a Grim Fandango 2. Afterall, it's not like Grim took home dozens of critical awards, and the best PC game award of 1998. I cannot be the only Adventure game fan on these forums. What do you guys think about this? Is LucasArts systematically alienating their original fanbase, or is it time for us to just get a clue and go buy UT2K4? However if your as pissed as I am, let 'em know! Dark0ne
Can't really talk for Sam & Max or adventure games in general (never really like them, required you to actually think about what you were doing. Pfft!) but I find it amusing that the best Star Wars game to hit stores in years was one not even made by LucasArts, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Great game, got several games of the year award. Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony ;)
sodaplay.com
It looked like a good game I wish they were still making it. :(
Slaiv
I have to disagree. Jedi Outcast was a great game. And Battlefront looks very promising- Battlefield 1942 is a great game, and this is basically Battlefield set in Star Wars.
thanateros
Well I have to disagree with the Jedi Outcast being a great game. It was really typical of the series. Hideously long and confusing levels, subpar AI and the ability to use force powers wasn't intuitive (which they should have been). The lightsaber combat improved from Jedi Knight and I did like how they reworked Force Speed. But the weapon models = sucked major. It was UT but with lightsabers and force powers. KOTOR indeed has been the best Star Wars game released in a long time. The Rogue Squadron series sucks it major; and I still can't tell the difference between II and III. LucasArts I don't think understands that it's a bad idea to use the same game three times in a row and just improve the graphics. Monkey Island the series that LucasArts should best be known for since they're really really well done. Now if only they could take that sort of detail and apply it to the star wars universe the company would earn more respect. But as it stands LucasArts games, like Lucas himself has lost their touch in being able to infuse the Star Wars universe with the light that we all used to enjoy so thoroughly. Peregrine
I agree... they're losing their quality of games. Haven't played the ones you're talking about, but it's the same with their other games. Instead of great games, they're settling for yet another generic fps. KOTOR was an excellent rpg. JKII and Academy were not terrible games, but they weren't that great. With the exception of the lightsaber, the weapons were all pointless, borderline unusable and dull. The saber combat was the only good part about the newer games. Though Academy improved this, the storyline and world were unimpressive at best. And the multiplayer side, outside saber duelling, was unimaginative and barely playable. It was UT but with lightsabers and force powers. That simple statement makes my point quite nicely. Academy was a step in the right direction, but it didn't go nearly far enough. The Rogue Squadron series sucks it major; and I still can't tell the difference between II and III. LucasArts I don't think understands that it's a bad idea to use the same game three times in a row and just improve the graphics. Exactly. Meanwhile the x-wing/tie fighter series sits abandoned, it's far greater potential all wasted. Now if only they could take that sort of detail and apply it to the star wars universe the company would earn more respect. But as it stands LucasArts games, like Lucas himself has lost their touch in being able to infuse the Star Wars universe with the light that we all used to enjoy so thoroughly. My thoughts exactly. Just like the movies, they're producing decent, but unexceptional games. It seems all the imagination and greatness has left that company, and we're left with just another average, lost in the sea of averages. I have to disagree. Jedi Outcast was a great game. And Battlefront looks very promising- Battlefield 1942 is a great game, and this is basically Battlefield set in Star Wars. My point exactly. Instead of a great game, they're settling for sticking the Star Wars label on an existing game. Sure, it might be a decent game to clone, but where's the innovation? Dark0ne
X-Wing vs Tie Fighter....amazing game. Tie Fighter, also a great game with loads to do. What we really need to see is Freelancer/X2 meets the Star Wars universe.

The same could be said of EA and the FIFA series, but then again they are still bought in their droves ;) I lament for Sam and Max. I grew up watching the TV series but was too young for the first game (although i did get Day of the Tentacle, yeah, those were good times) and its really unfortunate that its been cancelled. I think this goes to show that the adventure games market really has died its death. BTW: I haven't played KOTOR yet, but once i'm earning again its one of the first on my list. Peregrine
The same could be said of EA and the FIFA series, but then again they are still bought in their droves That's exactly the problem. People buy it, and it makes a profit... but the quality isn't there. They're settling for just continuing business as usual instead of trying to improve the product. They're so locked into that successful formula that they can't produce a truly great game anymore.

It seems to me that the overriding object of games development in the mainstream today is making as much money as possible. This is why there is an absolute slew of sequels in production, such as Metal Gear Solid 3, Onimusha 3, Halo 2, Silent Hill 4 and Gran Turismo 4, to name but a few. This is also why practically no-one is willing to try anything new, yet as soon as someone does, and it's successful, everyone jumps on the bandwagon. Metal Gear Solid is a prime example of this.
