Suggestion: How about not forcing people who don't want an account

Recommended Posts

I always love sites that try and boost their subscription numbers with bogus accounts like this site. I don't want to have an account to post on your forums. I simply don't care. I came here from a PC Gamer review to take a look at a Skyrim mod. The fact that I have to register for this site just to download a small file, like you expect me to post on your forums, is Micky Mouse to say the least.

If your site is good enough, people will want to join. The fact that you have to force people to join doesn't speak well of this site in any way. I can tell you that I won't be coming back here ever again after my files are done being downloaded. I don't appreciate being blackmailed for my personal information.

This crap gets a response, but I post about giving mod authors more freedom with description page design by adding a couple more, standard, bbcode's and my thread is full of cricket sounds. Even a 'no' would be better than getting ignored.

And so I'm not stealing this thread, I don't like being forced to register for forums either when all I want is to download something, but since I use this site quite a bit right now, it wasn't a problem for me.

I'm going to assume that the OP isn't trolling and give a straight answer.

If you've ever had to deal with the massive spam problems that no-registration forums have, you'll know why. Forums and guestbooks that allowed passers-by to leave comments without registration were very popular in the 90's - they've all but disappeared due to being flooded with spam.

He was talking about just for downloading files, not posting.

 I'll try that again then. :P

If you've ever had to pay for bandwidth, you'll know why. There are bots that can crawl a website and rip all its contents without user intervention. This uses up bandwidth that legitimate users should be enjoying. The site owner can either implement checks to ensure that users are legitimate human users (registration or CAPTCHA) or he can pay an arm and a leg in bandwidth and architecture costs to accommodate these bots.
