MUTHRUKDARL
I am trying to install the "ultra low graphics" mod (because my computer is old and weak), and I'm having some issues. The readme:-replace two .ini files-go into one of them and switch the stock graphics card info with your own-play skyrim I follow the readme instructions, enter my graphics card information into the .ini file, and then I launch Skyrim. This is where the trouble starts. The display setting is for a ~1000x600 "Letterbox Mode," but it says my graphics card doesn't allow for that display. I have to run ~1200x800. -When I switch the display to 1200x800, the defaults all reset and the mod is rendered useless. -When I re-install the mod, it sets the display to 1000x600-repeat ad nauseum Any advice? My graphics card is the Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS (and it sucks).
Georgiegril
My advice is to read up on various ways to change your graphics without a mod. RookieNoob's guide includes tweaks for both low and high end graphics, and good explanations of how they work. The Geforce skyrim tweak guide has 20 pages of ways to improve skyrim, and how it will affect your performance. I have a 9800GT 512, and my skyrim has gotten much nicer thanks to both of these.Another note...you will want to make sure your drivers are working optimally. This guide for proper driver installation(NVidia changed the process, but wasn't very good at telling anyone) goes through what you need to so step by step. Hope this helps! However, I want to make sure I'm actually working toward a valid end here, and not just spending hours reconfiguring everything. My issue is solely in the graphics card. Every other aspect of my computer safely meets the minimum requirements. Relatively speaking, my graphics card is vastly inferior to the rest of my laptop. Would reinstalling my drivers actually do anything at this point? I had to roll them back about 6 months ago because I was bluescreening and Windows blamed Nvidia (it totally worked). I don't want to end up destroying my computer just so I can play skyrim in really low quality. Until then, I'll be playing with the graphic tweaking link you sent me. I'm sure that will do most of what the mod did in the first place. Thanks for the advice!
Dhegonus
skyrim doesn't overly rely on the graphics.. most of the lag caused is actually coding related, not graphics.. because the guys at bethesda can make something look pretty, but rather half ass the coding unfortunatly, search for the hialgo booster mod, it works wonders for lower end computers, you can also grab a copy of ordenator, i think it is called, this drastically reduces the size of the textures and makes them laod quicker and less hassle to the computer, of course you should lso download gamebooster 3 (google it). with those three installed and running, you should atlest get a reasonable frame rate :)
Sonreac
Game booster 3 definitely works. In fact, I have almost every Iobit program there is. Very simple to use and run with very few problems from my end. And like Georgiegirl said, I found that updating my drivers worked wonders even though I've only had this PC since I got my tax return. Though I wouldn't go to high up in the driver versions. Make sure that whatever version you get supports your card. *nods sagely*
