Vortex just not doing well

I am using Vortex on a windows 10 computer with loads of memory. When I hit settings either the colored button or on the tool menu (if thats what those icons on the left are called) vortex gives me a brief flash and goes to whitescreen and reports a crash. When I choose the mods are staged at button I get the same result. When I choose the recently manage games are staged at button I get the same result. The box where it says recently managed games is empty of any games (I have 8 different games that should show up). Vortex will not allow me to specify where to put new mods (After 2 weeks I still have no idea where they are located on my computer). What was wrong with NMM? This is rhetorical and funny at this point.

The strange thing is I am using Vortex to manage Skyrim SSE and it works, the game runs fine, no complaints there. I am autistic and unable to explain things or follow instructions, so there is a possibility Vortex runs great and I am the problem. Then again maybe I'm not?

Since I haven't paid for your service I am wondering what response I will get?

Did you read the Whitescreen - Reasons topic pinned at the very top of this forum, posted by the developer of Vortex, that explains all of the things that causes Whitescreen and how to fix them?

After reading the rest of your post, what it says to me, is that you need to read the knowledge base on how to set up Vortex, and to watch the built in video tutorials.

You can easily check where your mods are being downloaded if you go to the settings tab and looked under DOWNLOAD and checked what the current folder is, you can also CHANGE where your download folder is.

The knowledge base and tutorials show you how to do this, you need to read that, and watch the tutorials, otherwise you're going to get frustrated

But check out the Whitescreen thread first, and get that problem fixed first.

I have read through the link provided about whitescreen (thanks a lot). I have been able to load tools like "Loot" "ssedit" "script extender, and many mods. Vortex seems to have great potential for easy use, if I can get it to run, most any other person can too. The whitescreen solution suggested requires me to open the settings (which causes the white screen and crash) so I am unable to address this issue. I did find mods location and other information in the help pages. I suppose someone will sort this problem out the white screen eventually and until then I am hoping settings and managing will work without my input or I can always go back to NNM. Again thanks for the input I usually need someone to tell me to "hey have you read the help file" before I, well, read the help file.

I've also read through the white screen page and some other post about general problems and I do try to find answers, video directions, sometimes even fixing a problem. But I do agree, most of the information I've seen is not aimed for non professional modders or people who really enjoy puzzles and how to fix them. But with the white screen, I'm giving up. If I turn just a bit it comes into focus, but turn again or walk and it's back to this. Keep moving and it's total white. It's almost like like a negative I used in photo class, sort of cool in an image, Not so much in my game.

I haven't changed any of my mods or anything else except the mod manager. So I'll go back to Mod Manager 2 for Fallout 4. Like normsomers it works fine with my Skyrim game, so I'll still be using it for that.

I do like a lot about Vortex, except for the complicated load order, good for people who understand, not good for those like me, who don't. Moving lines, having things connect in groups, is just more complicated than changing a load order from 30 to 31 or 29. Usually Gopher's videos help me with all my problems, but this time, not so much.

It could be lots of different reasons, my computer is not new and who knows what Windows does with their updates, but since this is the only thing that has changed in my game, I'm going to go back to mod manager 2 for the foreseeable future, keeping an eye out and thanking you all for the work you put into things.

Apparently the image didn't post, might be due to it being on my facebook page. It shows up before I entered it, tring once more.69256187_954683244924016_874191779508990

@mopotter: Wha... ? normsomers is talking about Vortex, our application, turning white which is effectively a crash. What you have is a mod setup that f's up your graphics in-game which is definitively not Vortex's fault.

@normsomers: Please try this: Close Vortex, then go to the directory where you installed Vortex (C:\Program Files\Black Tree Gaming Ltd\Vortex if you used the default installer) and inside there find "resources\app.asar.unpacked\bundledPlugins\theme-switcher".

Delete that directory or move it to somewhere outside the vortex directory.

Now try if you can go to the settings screen in Vortex.

What this does is completely remove the settings regarding themes from Vortex which is the most likely to cause this problem.

Please let us know if this helped.

Interesting. So even though I haven't changed any mods, and didn't have this before switching, this isn't due to the one thing that was changed. OK. Thanks. I'll play around with it. Still don't care for your load order plan, but that's minor. Thanks for answering.

You don't HAVE to connect ANYTHING in groups.

Groups is just another way to move your load order around.

You should read "Managing your load order" in the Knowledge Base, that should help.

Once you try it and get the hang of it, you'll find it very easy and intuitive.

When I first started with Vortex I got frustrated, because I tried to force my load order on Vortex because I was still using NMM's bad habits, so I tried to sort my entire load order by hand, which was really dumb.

Once I learned to let Vortex to most of the sorting, I found that out of the 272 mods I'm using for Skyrim SE, I've manually sorted about 8 mods.

Gopher Needs to update his Video Tutorials, they were made back when Vortex was in Alpha

This is helpful. Thank you. Thank you very much.

Agree, an updated video would be nice. There are a few people who do explanation very well, and I'll admit one of the nice things about his is his accent.

Ok going to go read and experiment and start saving for a new computer.

Appreciate the help.
