Deadly Dragons - Storm Dragon - overpowered, stupid fight

I was just about to enter Sky Haven Temple for this portion of the main quest (with Delphine and Esbern), but I got attacked by a Storm Dragon just as I approached.

Without getting into the ugly details, I got completely owned. Hard.

I had it on Master level difficulty (I always keep it on Master unless I really have no choice). But I got basically 1-shot, so I dropped it down 2 notches to Adept. 2 shots, dead. Then dropped it down to Novice (lol), and still got ridiculously owned.

I usually like really hard games, because I love to be challenged. And I love the satisfaction of winning. But this fight was awful... Basically Lydia Esbern and Delphine all killed the Storm Dragon before I could even get a shot off, because there was literally nowhere I could go to get away from his Storm spell. No matter where I ran or hid, I couldn't even stop to shoot once or I would just get insta-fried, even on Novice, and even though I'm almost level 40 and usually spam Health upgrades for my level-ups.

The rest of the game was balanced up until this point, and I had killed about a half-dozen or so dragons so far (sometimes with help), and each time it was surprisingly well-balanced (despite being modded) and very, very fun. But it was winnable. This time was just silly. I like hardmodes, yes, but not "you get completely fried for all of your health no matter what you do or where you go" modes.

Sorry if I sound like I'm ranting, but that fight was really terrible and unsatisfying. When I saw it die, all I did was sigh under my breath, "thanks Lydia."

My question is this: Did a modder do this? The only thing I can think of really is Deadly Dragons (which I have installed), and this is probably the culprit, but I don't want to start trolling his pages if it's not that modder's fault. (Plus it has thousands of comments already and mine would never get noticed.)

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to basically turn this dragon encounter "off" or something? Or just make it so the Storm spell is impossible for dragons to cast? Because it was a complete garbage encounter no matter what I did.

(Final note: This isn't to bash DD mod, it's actually quite good. But... as I keep saying, this fight was really, really terrible and stupid.)

Thanks for any help/sympathy :)

Yes it's Deadly Dragons, and those dragons don't care about you changing the difficulty very much when they have already spawned.

With DD, you're going to run into dragons that will rape you hard. I always get the Ethereal shout as soon as possible cuz without it you CANNOT close in on the dragons without them frying you.

If your butt is taking a bit too much dragon invasion, DD can be configured completely to your liking through the console (for example, reducing that dragon's breath damage). Just read the readme, it's all there.

Oh yeah and it's all your fault, no worries, leave the mod author's modpage alone ^^

I'll be completely, brutally honest. Storm Dragons are completely unbalanced. Their breath weapon is way stronger than it should be, and it leaves wall of lighting style. The only way to win is to have a set of Shock Resistance Gear. And even then it's iffy. They're worse if you're a wizard, because it drains magicka.

Surprisingly the best strategy is to use Storm Call. It'll blast them out of the sky so you can whallop them.

@Adrius: It's not even the breath damage that's the issue. It's what it leaves behind. It's like the lightning wall, and frankly that's very, very nasty.

They're powerful alright, and their breath is a fricking sniper rifle... hits from so far away ^^

I can still deal with them with my sword and boarder Dovahkiin by using Ethereal shout to ignore the breath attacks and close in on him when he's landed, and then power bashing him if he tries to breath at me again while blocking his bites.

I am using Improved Dragon Shouts and Duel - Combat Realism however, our games are rarely the same.

The Storm Call spell he uses, in tandem with his breath, is just stupidly OP. I was also using the Ethereal shout, but it just doesn't last long enough to evade the Storm, which is basically permanent and from which you cannot hide, ever. It's just constant drain on HP no matter where you are, regardless of how fast you run or how skilled you are at the game. It's unavoidable nuke damage.

I could bear it if it was just really, really powerful when you actually got hit - it would just mean I would have to be extremely careful about engaging and taking my shots etc. But my issue is that you lose basically no matter what.

@ Adrius Not sure what else you have going on in terms of modding, but I use SkyRe (that's about it), which basically drains your stamina really fast when you run as well (but that's not really the issue). It has to do with his ranged attacks being (for all intents and purposes) 100% unavoidable unless you spam ethereal shout, which you cannot because of CD.

If others feel as I do it might be worth the time just to post a suggestion on DD forums, and maybe the modder can tweak it just a bit. Storm Call on a dragon is massively OP.

I have to say I disagree. My character is level 67 and I have had a hard time finding anything I can't 1-shot for at least 10 levels. Deadly dragons offers a few really decent fights. There are not a lot of mods out there that accommodate higher level games, and I think it is just fine, including the storm dragons. I agree with what Adrius2 says, if they are too hard, then lower the difficulty...not your game difficulty but the mod difficulty, which may require you to uninstall/reinstall the mod, I dunno.

Same thing happend to me too when I'm playing a new game and began to fight mumilnir or whatever the first dragon you fight called I had Dragon Combat overhaul, deadly dragons, Enhanced mighty dragons reborn. And these 3 make Mumilnir look like Grigori except these 3 make him so overpowered that not even the whiterun guards that are helping me stand no chance against him and not even my berserker orc with overpowered damage with berserker rage can even kill him! it only did a tickle on him! wtf?! that is just ridiculously stupidly overpowered

I think I'm gonna have to remove deadly dragons or enhanced mighty dragons in order to f*#@ing kill him and guess what though? I did bring reinforcements with console commands to spawn 40 guards but not even rains of arrows can kill him either! and this is the first f*#@ing dragon that you fight for f*#@ sakes!

deadly dragons + dragon combat overhaul + Enhanced mighty dragons = Stupidly overpowered no way able to kill or destroy dragons.

Some of the dragons in Deadly Dragons only make sense if you use followers & the mod Death Alternative. That makes all dragons fun even if there are 2 or 3 of them.

I use another mod by the author of Deadly Dragons called Enemy Enhancer to control their strength.

I just ran into a Storm Dragon a little while ago on my level 47 breton summoner/destruction/arcane archer/crafting mage and it was a great fight. I used Clear Skies shout to clear the lightning storm, I'm pretty sure it had an effect in lessening the storm. I was attacked in the forest near Riften, I ran to the stables and hid under the roof to hide from further lightning attacks from the sky. I was able to use my poisoned Bound Bow, as well as my tempered fire enchanted ebony bow with daedric arrows to take long range sniping shots at from afar. I also think the guards of Riften and the couple of Dremora Lords I summoned helped (one at a time of course, I dont have the multiple summon perks from Path of Sorcery conjuration tree yet). I'm using Path of Sorcery overwriting Ordinator right now. My poisons are super OP since I have 90ish Alchemy and the Poisoner perk. One other thing that happened from the fight that I didnt even know could happen was that the Dragons Lightning Beam Laser From Mouth attack hit me once and took down 90% of my health in one hit, and my Master Robes of Conjuration broke into pieces! (Loot and Degradation) I didnt even know robes could break, I thought it was just light and heavy armor.

Anyway Storm Dragon is only one of many unique dragon types added by Deadly Dragons, and its only at level 50, there are also unique dragon types at 60 and 65.
