Steam is killing me!..

If you use skse [script extender] for the game, use the short cut the skse loader on your desktop to launch the game or if you don't use skse, make a shortcut to the skyrim launcher on your desktop and use it instead Edited by sinnerman69

Thanks again Sinnerman69, I finally found a labyrinthal way out of this:

1. if you do not update the Steam client app, it won't let you go offline - except I did not want to update it, every time I had done it before it introduced new errors and bugs in the file management, the UI, the Synch process!.. everywhere... Anyway, since I did not have much to loose, I downloaded the update from yesterday.

2. After that, I also unchecked everything in the 10 or 12 different settings windows - and discovered a tricky one in the Steam/Settings/Account window: a small line that says "don't save account credentials on this computer" - note the misleading phrasing - you'd think that you need to check it if you want to go offline, but no, the trick is checking this box disables the Offline mode!.. Meaning you have to want to "save credential on this computer" in order to go offline. Now I understand that the credential they're talking about here are your client's ID, not your game stats or achievements!.. Honest, this must be a nightmare for people who don't speak English!... (I know, there is a French version of Steam but it's even buggier than the Englsih one!)

3. I unsubscribed from most of my Worshop mods, I'd been wanting to do it for a long time anyway... At least , that reduces a bit the damn endless downloads when I want to verify the cache...

And now, I can go Offline... :Psigh...

The nice note about this is Bethesda's support answered my questions less than 24 hours after I emailed them - and though, of course they cannot admit to endorsing modding (kinda contradictory with the fact that they paired up with Steam to market the game, when Steam openly encourages modding), they also were thorough enough in their answer as to point me in the direction of that misleading little treacherous option in the settings.

Good guys, Bethesda! (but 3 days later, still no sign from Steam...)

Cheers man, relax, I'm done bothering you!.. And many thanks again - it's great to feel like someone is trying to help when you get stuck!..

@ Rabbit51:

Yep, I know, but I do not intend to buy anything from Steam ever!.. (well maybe the DLC...) and I'm unsubscribing from my few remaining Worshops anyway, so I'll save the damn re-downloading time!..

It was such a drag to find out how to bypass the check/uncheck/recheck process in them settings boxes, I'll sure remember next time!.. What bothers me most actually is the obligation to update their app in order to be able to go offline...

Cheers, Rabbit!

You also forgot to mention that you MUST allow STEAMypile to be active and control your system if you want to even think about using the CK. If you really want to play free from STEAMypile, after you lunch your game in Offline mode, when the splash window to start the game comes up, open your task manager and kill the STEAMypile service. That will also net you an increase in FPS in the game. Funny how that works. It tells you about an error and delays starting about 1/2 a minute, but after its tantrum, your game runs fine. @ Brandy_123:

Yeah, I noticed that too about the Steam.exe still running in the background even in Offline mod, but I don't use much the CK, I opened it a couple of times to try and figure my way in there, but this is not my line of specialization at all (I'm a screenwriter and an art director - completely at ease with Photoshop or Premiere, but no clue about scripting...). Cant' even open a simple .esp (like a standalone armor .esp for instance - I guess I intuitively understand how it may pair meshes and textures and indicate files pathes to the game, but I'd love to be able to actually try my hand at tweaking one).

I'd love to be able to learn how to mod though, as Skyrim has given me a couple of ideas for side-storylines that'd complement the Vanilla storyworld - or even be able to mod a few armors I have in mind. Having played the game twice now, I really know it well enough as to insert questlines that'd feel like they belong there, but I really don't have time to learn how to mod right now...

Anyway, yeah, I now manage to play offline - but somehow the launcher keeps f***ing up my load order every time - and even modifies it in NMM, which is odd... It behaves as if it relied only on the pluggins download dates to order them, and since Steam re-downloaded all my workshop mods everytime I launched the game... Reordering manually 100 mods is really a drag. Guess I should download BOSS but I've heard people saying it crashes (and I've had my share of crashes, I'd rather play a bit now that I've gotten rid of them) - do you know how BOSS does with patch 1.7?

And yeah, going Offline did make me gain FPS, that's great

Thanks for your note Brandy_123, cheers!

New development, new stunt from Steam:

Now, whenever I go online to manage my Workshop mods - meaning unsubscribe essentially, I simply cannot access the Community or Workshop pages - whatever I click on, the only page that does open is... the STORE!.. (of course).

I've sent their "support" not-so-hot-line another message (still waiting for an answer to my previous one) just for the hell of it... I am curious to see if they ever do answer, even if only by Christmas...

Steam is nothing but a bad joke of a so-called "service"... why on earth did Bethesda ever pick Steam to market their games?!..

Cheers to all :0)
