revjeff
Hello folks, I am sure this is a simple fix for most, and I know this has something to do with controlled folder access, just no clue what to do about it. A tale of two Dragons, Dragons Dogma and Dragons Age. I got a copy of Dragons Dogma and in the middle of installing mods, ( they installed fine the first day with no issues) Next day I loaded Vortex and mods would install, but all mods froze on deployment. I messed with it most of the day and found problems not just on DD but on most other games I tried, at deployment, Vortex Froze. Decided to uninstall and go back to NMM since it never gave me headaches. Installed NMM and installed all the mods for dragons dogma that I had planned. Played the game with no issues, the next day I opened NMM and somehow vortex came up with an update. I let it do its thing and went back to it and everything worked albeit Dragons dogma was the only game managed now. I also had some mods I had picked out for Dragons Age, so I Installed Dragons Age with my Origins account and opened up vortex to see what I could do. (I Used to have the steam version but uninstalled it when I left steam) Upon Opening Vortex, it had already discovered the new installation of Dragons Age. This is where my trouble begins, it is discovered but when I try to activate it, it moves to the deployment screen and freezes at about 30 percent. Doesn't matter how long you leave it, the only way to move on is to close vortex and restart. BTW it freezes at the same point that the mods in Dragons dogma froze, so that is likely when my trouble started. Diagnostics files say something about missing Python (no Idea what that is) and in the end it mentions "Winapi failed to retrieve controlled folder access". At this point, I am open to any and all suggestions on how to resolve this. Not sure where the log files are stored or I would attach them as well. Tell me where and I will if needed. HadToRegister
Fri, 22 Mar 2019 20:57:00 GMT - error: Winapi failed to retrieve controlled folder access status errno=2, path=SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Windows Defender Exploit Guard\Controlled Folder Access, syscall=RegGetValue This is a problem caused by Windows Defender protecting the directory too much, should be fixed in 0.17.8 or at least a pop up has been added that addresses how to handle it.You need to turn off some Ransomware Protection in Windows Defender
5FingerButtPunch
It can be a bit more complicated if there is 3rd party provider. I managed to have about 85 folders get back in order with what I've already done. I basically tried to follow this. https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/Controlled_Folder_Access Had to go through a huge back, and forth between forums, and FAQ's between Microsoft, and Virus protection provider to find a work around. Which ultimately led to me having to go offline, and remove virus protection while offline. Follow the steps in post. Then re install my previous virus protection after making changes to Windows Defender. I recommend trying to avoid this if possible. Again, this did not resolve everything. But the majority of the issues were. I will try to keep posted if I run into anything else. Let me know if this helps.
revjeff
Ok, so I went in on my pc's main account and turned OFF the protected file option, rebooted and restarted vortex, it didn't help. Then I read on another site something about even though you are listed as admin, you aren't really and told how to activate the real hidden admin. Ok, I am game (and a little desperate now) Followed the instructions and there he was hidden all along. Logged into the hidden admin account and somehow it was on(should be off by default I thought), turned it off and logged back into my main account. Restarted Vortex and still same issue. Ok, next step, I went back into my main and turned protected file option back on but added vortex.exe as an exception. Back to Vortex, still no luck. Back to hidden admin,(at this point I am thinking this probably won't help, but maybe) and again, NOT. I spent most of the night going over every forum post here and elsewhere that even hinted at errors caused by the protected file option, still no luck. Again even more desperate, upgraded my windows install, the same version but used update option to keep files. No luck again. I even tried one solution that somehow changed all of my *.exe files into pdf files. Now that was an awful adventure. I went into Vortex Options and noticed that my mod staging folder was set back to my user/appdata, and it was all red. Well d*mn when did that happen? (likely by default on one of my reinstalls) Ok, I fixed that, just made a new vortex mods directory on my game drive. Ok, its morning now and I just noticed one more thing that should have been obvious from the start, but stubborn people like me charge ahead like a bull and miss things. I know I have read in the forums both that this does and does not matter, but Origin installs to the Program Files(x86) directory. Properties show this as a read-only directory. Ok, bull-headed me say to just untick read-only in properties and be done with it. Level headed little s#*! in me say to take a few minutes and re-install dragon age to a different directory. Well barring any other ideas, that is what I am about to do. I'll post in a little bit if it makes any difference, as up to this point, vortex is still being stubborn, but I'll be damned if it can out-stubborn me. Haha, I admire your tenacity!I also appreciate the detailed explanation as to the steps you've taken, it could help others in the future I'm wondering if Uninstalling Vortex, and downloading the version that allows you to install it anywhere you want would be helpful, because the one click install Vortex installs to the Program Files Directory, and Windows is really overly protective of that folder.
