Vortex dupes mods instead of making variants.

How this happened, I don't know. But I installed a few more quests mods which link with Legacy of the Dragonborn and I thought it might be a good idea to reinstall it as well as the patch pack mod. I gave them the name "Moar Mods!". However, since there is some kind of autodetect for LotD and I don't know exactly how that works, I thought it might be a good idea to have all the new mods deployed and plugins enabled. I forgot to do this, so I did it again, this time choose to replace the new variant.

I noticed something was wrong because I was presented with a notice that LotD .bsa and .esp were redundant. So I checked and lo and behold, it was duped. See screenshot.

When you rename a mod for a new variant, do you expect Vortex to go in and rename all the mod files so you can install both?

That won't happen; it is up to you to only enable one variant.

As long as only one is enabled, you won't get redundant messages.

Uh, yeah, actually, it is supposed it.

When you reinstall a mod, and choose "replace" instead of creating a new variant it does exactly that: It replaces it. It uses the same staging directory when installing.

You chose to replace the "New Variant", meaning you already had two copies to begin with because you installed it a second time.
So, what you did was this

1. You installed the mod
2. You installed it again, but instead you picked NEW VARIANT
3. You installed the mod YET AGAIN, but chose to overwrite the New Variant, and not the original mod.

So you only overwrote the Variant, not the original.

You should probably stop experimenting and take some time and read the knowledge base and watch some tutorials, because everything that is going wrong in Vortex for you is caused by user error at this point.

Afaict this works exactly as intended.

When you reinstall a mod you're given two options, either "replace", which - well, replaces what you already had installed or "add variant" which adds a new installation of the mod without removing the old one. Hence "Add".

When you add you have one more and if you have both enabled, one will obsolete the other.

The problem is that two are enabled. I've been using variants, but this is the first time I've ended up with both enabled at the same time.

Normally when I create a new variant, the current one remains enabled and there is an orange box with a drop down menu. So Vortex (from what I can tell) recognizes the two staged mods as two different versions (variants) of the same mod.

I then select the new variant from the drop down box, and Vortex switches from one variant to the next.

Again, I've never had two enabled at the same time.

edit: This time was not different. When I added the new variant, there was a drop down menu, and only one was enabled. The problem arose when I went to replace the variant with a new variant. At that time all variants got enabled.

For what its worth, the solution I came to was to uninstall both and start over.
