Vortex Completely disabled Skyrim SE

I installed Vortex 17.8 on 3/27/2019 to add a couple of needed patches for a couple Skyrim SE mods. I run Skyrim from Steam. Latest version of Skyrim SE. Latest version of Steam. I run Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with all patches up-to-date. I run this on an Alienware R17 laptop with 16GB memory, i7-4710HQ CPU, Nvidia GTX-970M. I have been using the game with NO ISSUES since it's launch with this configuration. I use ~200 mods from Bethesda's mod site (not Nexus). After installing & activating (3) patches from Nexus, Skyrim SE would no longer start. I would get to the launcher, click play, the launcher closes, and nothing. Ever. The game will show as "Running" in Steam; but that tag will disappear after about 30-60 seconds, indicating the game did not start. I uninstalled all mods in Vortex per your directions. No change. I uninstalled Vortex. No change. I uninstalled Skyrim SE, cleaned my PC and registry and re-installed Skyrim SE. No change. I deleted all Vortex & Black Tree Gaming folders left over by the uninstall. No change. I disabled my Anti-Virus. No change. So now I'm stuck with no longer being able to run Skyrim SE. As far as I'm concerned, Vortex acts like malware. You should remove it or fix it. The old Nexus Mod Manager was a nice program. I had no such issues with that (tho I never used it for SkyrimSE). If you have a fix for this, please let me know. I really want to run the game. I have almost 3 years worth of time invested in it. I submitted this originally on 3/28 on the main Nexus site and was passed on to this site. Right now I do not have Vortex installed. Please help.

Well, it would've been helpful if you hadn't uninstalled absolutely EVERYTHING, and are now asking for help.

It could've been that you downloaded mods for Skyrim LE by accident, a lot of people have done that in the help forum.

There's nothing anybody can do for you because you've completely wiped everything, so, not really sure what you want at this point.

Vortex is completely fine. Outside of user error, Vortex can't cause this situation to happen.

With that said, the reason why you can't get your game into a working state is because you deleted Vortex without bothering to hit the Purge button (or hitting the Deploy button after disabling the mods).

Even with NMM, you would be in this situation if you just straight up uninstalled NMM, as the files wouldn't have been removed from the game folder.

So, the next step, is to manually download the patches again, open them up, and cross check the files within with the files in your game folder, deleting the appropriate files. You'll also want to rename all of the files with the .backup extension (or whatever it is), as Vortex does this to preserve the files that are "overwritten", so that the game will be able to read those files and a mod that you have installed through Besthesda won't be missing anything.

this is 100% user error.

Sorry my friend, I know this is no consolation to you, but you absolutely failed to read up on what you wanted to do and how to do it and you basically wrecked everything.

I don't know any way out of that, nor do I know any mod manager out there that would allow you to commit such vandalism on its environment and live to tell the tale.

If the old NMM was a nice program, why did you decide to quit using it and start with Vortex without knowing exactly how to install it, how to set it up and how to use it and on the top of that, to install 200 mods ?

Everybody blames Vortex but not themselves. Sorry if you do not like my input but it is more than a year that Vortex is out and still people do not read and they start doing things they have been told NOT to do and blames Vortex for it. Every single day I still read posts from new users saying that they will import all their mods from NMM to Vortex and this has been advised NOT to do for example, but again, because they do not want to read and learn, problems arise and obviously, they blame Vortex when all the fault fall on the user.

OK. You're not paying attention.

1. All of the 200+ mods were downloaded a LONG time before I used Vortex.

2. All of the mods were downloaded thru Bethesda net, not Vortex.

3. I never said I transferred anything from NMM to Vortex. Especially as I have never used NMM for Skyrim SE. Please stick to the subject.

4. I downloaded only 3 patch files for mods I had. (as the patches were not available thru Bethesda net)

5. It was after I enabled the mods in Vortex that Skyrim SE quit starting.

6. I then disabled and removed the mods per instructions posted by Vortex's help site. How do you know I did not hit the purge button or the deploy button? That is not true. I went through that process.

7. When that did not work I removed Vortex.

8. When that did not work I uninstalled Skyrim SE completely and reinstalled it from scratch. That should have overwritten anything altered by Vortex.

9. I'm sorry to disappoint; but Skyrim was working fine before Vortex, and now will not start after I installed Vortex, no matter what.

10. Uninstalling everything then reinstalling the game should have cleared the error.

11. I installed Vortex because NMM would not download mods from Nexus anymore.

12. Contrary to public belief - I did do research on how to use Vortex. I do not believe I mentioned anywhere that I did not. So please do not lump me in with those who do not do the research.

I may try the suggestion of reinstalling Vortex and the mods then doing a search and destroy on the mod files to see if that will do anything. That was actually useful advice. Thank you!

I have read elsewhere where this has been an issue after activating mods in Vortex for Skyrim SE; but have been unable to find any helpful advice on how to reverse it as most of the posts for this are for the VR version and/or an issue with SKSE, neither of which I use.

The steps you took to try and solve your issue was like using a sledgehammer to kill a mosquito.

You should have come here before you did step 7 through 10.

Also, I'm not sure where you read "elsewhere" about Vortex having problems activating mods with Skyrim SE, but I hope it's not Reddit, because Reddit is a cesspool of Anti-Vortex hate.

I have no issue activating , installing, disabling, removing, purging, enabling, and deploying mods with Vortex and Skyrim SE, and I'm currently using 225 mods for it.

WHICH THREE MODS did you download and install when Skyrim SE stopped working?

Because someone else had the same problem recently and it turned out all it was was a House Mod being the problem.
