Staging Folder Disaster (Need help safely removing Vortex)

So after my OG Skyrim started having some serious conflicts I couldn't figure out, I wanted to start clean, so I uninstalled Vortex and deleted the Vortex Mods folder willy nilly because I thought it'd just set everything up again. I reinstalled the program and Vortex was unhappy with my decisions.

I ignorantly linked the mods staging folder to my D: Drive, which was a mistake since trying to get the mod staging folder didn't work. The reason why this was a disaster was because I personally had moved over all my normal PC stuff (Desktop, Downloads, Documents ect.) to D: Drive so it would stay on my hard-drive.

Changing the mod staging made all my D: Drive stuff show up in Vortex as mods , so I made a new folder in D: Drive just for Vortex based on a tutorial for mod staging.

And thus when Vortex tried to move the mod staging folder to my new folder, it moved every single file in my D:Drive.

I just managed to copy back all my D:Drive files to their proper place (decided to copy instead of move just to ensure nothing got lost)

Now when I open Vortex, it's saying that the mods changed on disk and I need to apply changes, but the only option is the new folder that started this D:Drive migration mess despite there still being a "Vortex Mods" folder somehow still standing after the dumpster fire of my folly.

At this point I'd just like to safely remove Vortex in a way that doesn't endanger my D:Drive, and after the "where did all my D:Drive files go" scare I honestly don't trust myself to figure it out without help.

Click on this link and it will show you how to uninstall Vortex :

The problem with that tutorial is that most of the steps involve working within Vortex. I currently don't have a "working" Vortex because if I click "apply changes" all of my D:Drive stuff will just get moved again.

If I move all of my D: Drive stuff to a new folder, and leave the "migration" folder with Vortex Mods and the Vortex Mods staging folder, should it go back to a working state?

I wish you had come here for help before you did all that, it probably could've been fixed easily.

Now you're going to have to remove Skyrim, COMPLETELY, and reinstall it, to make sure EVERYTHING is gone.
Also, completely remove your mod staging folder, wherever you put it.

Completely uninstall Vortex, and look for any other thing left behind such as Vortex folders, folders in your appdata\local\GAME NAME\ folder, program files, and possibly ProgramData folder.

Then, install SKyrim, and Vortex, and this time, set your mod staging folder INSIDE Vortex

Same with your Downloads Folder

Keep giving updates/reports on how it's all going.

I followed your instructions and Vortex still is automatically going to my D:Drive, and put back the vortex staging file I deleted.

I deleted everything vortex before reinstalling so I don't understand why it's going back.

The only reason why I haven't tried changing the staging folder is because I don't fully understand the "moving and purging" action it tries to do and I don't want it to delete anything off my D:Drive

(Edit: This may be due to me forgetting to delete the Vortex folder in my C:Drive, which I didn't expect because I thought I had told it to go to my D:Drive like most of my new programs, but turns out I let the auto-installer go to C:. I'm going to redo the instructions and delete the Vortex file from the C:Drive and see if that helps)

Update:

The C:Drive removal worked great, the custom reinstall didn't have any of my old data.
Following a Gopher tutorial for proper installing, but instead of having my mods in my D:Drive like in his tutorial I'd prefer if it was on my Desktop.

This shouldn't be an issue, right?

Also thanks again guys for helping me out, next time I'll make a point if I'm having issues I can't google away I'll try here first before doing anything rash.

Just make sure your Mod Staging folder is on the same drive as your games, or Vortex won't be able to make the Hardlinks

Skyrim is in my D:Drive just like my Desktop, so great!

Thanks again, back into the screaming void of modding I go!
