Massive rule management tips.

I'm trying to manage about 250 mods for Ultimate Skyrim, and I've messed up a few times as it's obvious when you have to follow a guide composed of 200 pages where some mods no longer exist (like aMidian textures, which were never ported to SSE).

So while I'm juggling with mod orders I've noticed a major problem that makes me waste time like mad: Mass rule management.

There are at least 2 features in this topic that I haven't seen covered:

1. Remove all rules. It's really tedious when I have set all the rules, but I want to get back to scratch and there's no button to remove all rules and set everything back to "??" (not after, nor before). There might even be 2 buttons to achieve this efficiently, and so far I haven't found a way to do that.

2. Set all rules to suggested mode. I ignore how does Vortex select when a mode is suggested to load in a specific order, I thought at first it was because the main files pointed in that direction, but after a few mods I realized it's not the case. E.g. Miraak 1.1 hotfix is suggested to load before Miraak 1.0 textures, and makes sense to load in the opposite direction (happens with other mods). In any case I think it would be a great idea to have a button that automatically picks all "suggested" options for all mods, so at least we can have a first batch of mods loaded properly.

I don't know if it's possible to achieve this somehow, or if I could use LOOT to sort the load order and let Vortex know I want to overwrite files progressively as they are deployed somehow, or maybe LOOT is now integrated in Vortex because it can sort the order by itself.

In any case, thanks in advance. Any help or tips appreciated.

you don't need to use loot outside of vortex, it's already built in for vortex to use loot rules.

In Vortex a "suggested" rule is just that - a suggestion. The suggestion is based solely on the time stamps on the mods involved. Since time stamps are not always determinative for rule construction, you should therefore carefully evaluate each suggested rule.

If you mean "install"-order on mods-tab, the only method to remove all rules I'm aware of is to uninstall all mods with rules (meaning all showing yellow/brownish in the Dependencies column). This is since Vortex don't keep the rules when you uninstall the mod.

For plugins, you'll need to manually delete userlist.yaml from %appdata%\vortex\name_of_game\

2. Set all rules to suggested mode. I ignore how does Vortex select when a mode is suggested to load in a specific order, I thought at first it was because the main files pointed in that direction, but after a few mods I realized it's not the case. The suggested order is often wrong, since for some strange reason some releases patches where all the files are older than the mod they're patching and this means Vortex will suggest the wrong mod.

As for LOOT, either don't use LOOT to sort your plugin load order at all, or in Vortex disable auto-sorting and only use LOOT (or some other means) to sort your plugin load order.

You're following a guide?

Does the guide also insist you set your load order a certain way?

Because there's no reason to have 250 rules set in your load order.

I use 275 mods with Fallout 4 and have 18 rules set.

You need to forget everything that NMM has ingrained into you and learn the new way of working with mods.

There's no need to micromanage the plugin order like there was with NM
