Vortex keeps crashing every time I try to install a new mod.

So I haven't been messing around with mods for about half a year but I was in the mood to play some Skyrim and decided to add some new mods. But no matter which mod it is, simple or complex the program will always crash and display these two messages.qEREpYx.png

And these messages will always come if I try to boot up Vortex again, I have to uninstall and install it again just to get it to start up properly again. What do I do? Do I need to just remove everything and start from scratch?

the second screen shot suggests you have installed a version of vortex, then installed an older version of vortex for whatever reason.

i'd advise you to uninstall it completely and go with the current (stable) version. messing around with back levelled programs - any program - is dangerous. as you can see.

But that's the thing I didn't. All I did was boot up the Vortex I had, refamiliarize myself with it, went here and looked for some mods to install and got these messages. Then I uninstalled it and downloaded the newest version from here and tried again and the same thing happened. The message makes no sense!

yeah, vortex is well known to tell lies....oh wait, no it isn't.

the error message is clear, so, uninstall whatever version you're running. i'd recommend you use something like revo uninstaller, as that will clean up registry entries than can be left behind, and then download and install the latest, stable version and see how you go.

Right. Lets see here.

All gone. Now lets install Vortex again.

Right off the website.

Newest version, all shiny and pristine.

Now lets just get a simple mod that doesn't require anything special, just to be safe.

Always comes up, doesn't seem strange.

Proceeding as usual.

Oh look at that, the same message.

Seems to me something is clearly broken and I'll need to delete everything.

Umm, it looks like you have associated nxm links with (a very old version of) the vortex installer instead of vortex itself so when you try to download a file it tries to install an old version of vortex replacing the 0.17.11 you had.

Deleting everything won't even do much for you because unless you want to dive into the registry, uninstalling will not file your url association.

Open Vortex, verify you're running 0.17.11, go to settings->downloads and make sure the "Handle ... links" toggle at the very top is enabled. If it actually is, maybe disable it, restart Vortex, enable it again.

Also make sure you're not running either Vortex or your webbrowser as admin, the two can only "communicate" correctly if they run under the same user account.

I've now done everything. I've deleted and uninstalled everything to do with Vortex and the old Nexus Manager which apparently was still lurking in the files. I've checked and neither my browser or Vortex are run as admin. The Handle links thing was toggled so I disabled it, restarted and enabled it again but the message always appears.

I've noticed you're using Firefox. Can you try opening up Options, then scrolling down on General to the Applications section and changing the nxm to Always Ask.

From there, when you click on the download button, it should open up a prompt asking which program to use. Find and select Vortex(.exe).

I've noticed also on Reddit, that some people have had this issue with Firefox, where hitting the toggle doesn't do anything. Which is really strange because there's been minimal chatter about this issue, meaning that for most people, Firefox has also been changing what program is used with the nxm. But for some people, it remains what it used to, or, apparently in your case, tries running an installer (which makes no sense to me, but whatever, I'm just going to consider it as a possible Windows bug).

THAT DID IT!

As you can see you were right and Firefox was for some reason selecting an ancient version I don't even have anymore instead of the current version! Thank you so much! Any mod seeing this can close the topic and maybe put a (Solved) in the title if they can so anyone in the future who has this problem can find it. Thank you again FlamingCheeseMonkey and thank you everyone else for your input.pL1mCYn.jpg
