Basically moving to a new machine more or less.. Just want to be sure I'm doing this right

So I basically, bought the equivalent of a "crate motor" and I am upgrading to a whole new generation of CPU/MOBO/RAM and then running a few SSD's in Raid-5.

Obviously I have to re-download Steam and Vortex which is no problem for me but I don't want to have to re-download all my mods.. So Is the following process the right way to do this or am I missing something? I figure it is better to ask before than be all messed up after cause I didn't ask someone.

#1. Open vortex on my current Setup

#2. From the Dashboard click on "Settings"

#3. Click on the "Downloads" tab

#4. Under the path for the downloads I click on the Orange Lettering that Says "C:\Users\ThisSpaceForRent\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\downloads"

#5. Copy the Folders (Fallout 3, Fallout 4, SkyrimSE) to my external I am using to backup all my files...

#6. Once I drop in the Crate Engine and get everything back running, I install Steam and Vortex..

#7 . . . . . I have no idea where I go now. Do I just follow the above steps and paste the folders back into the NEW path that will show up under the download tab or am I supposed to perform some import? That is where I get lost. I 100% expect to have to re-install and re-deploy them I just don't want to have to re-download them..

If anyone can make sense of this and tell me if I am even remotely in the ballpark on doing this right I would greatly appreciate it..

Thanks in advance,

When moving a Vortex managed game to a new computer, you need to move the following directories from the old computer:

  • {USER}/AppData/Roaming/Vortex
  • {USER}/AppData/Local/{GAME}
  • Documents/My Games/{GAME}

Once that's done, install Vortex on the new computer. Then double-check the paths for the Mod Staging Folder, the Downloads Folder, and your dashboard tools.

Okay, so move those onto the new machine prior to installing vortex and then point to them inside the vortex app once it is installed, and I will have my mods downloaded but NOT installed correct? I will need to re-install them and then redeploy on the new machine?

Again, thank you for the assistance!

Yes, move the directories prior to installing Vortex. If all the directories on the new computer are identical to the ones on the old computer, then the paths should be OK. But it doesn't hurt to check. As for reinstalling mods, you won't have to do that if you're moving a current game and you've done everything correctly. Be sure to re-deploy anyway (deploy is your friend). Also check your plugins page to be sure the plugins are enabled, and check your saves page to make sure the saves have registered.

I'm sorry, I don't think I worded my question correctly. I would like to move my mods to the new machine without having to re-download all of them, but I only want the mods. I wish to start a whole new game with some of the mods enabled and not necessarily all of them. So it will be a fresh install of games and starting from new game so I only wish to move the downloaded mods. Not the saves and current load order. I hope that makes more sense.

Thank you!

All of the mods you downloaded are in the Vortex DOWNLOAD folder.

Just copy that folder to the new machine and you won't have to download them again.

Okay, in the case you've described, things are considerably easier. Follow these steps:

  • Install Vortex to your new computer.
  • Verify that the paths for the Downloads Folder and the Mod Staging Folder are where you want them. (Mod Staging Folder needs to be on the same drive as your game but not in the game folder.)
  • Copy your mod archives from your old computer into the Downloads Folder on the new computer.
  • Start Vortex and install, enable, sort, and deploy the mods (some or all).
  • Set up dashboard tools.
  • Configure profile(s).
  • Play your game.

Note, if you only copies the downloads and not the Vortex settings in %appdata%\vortex to the new machine, Vortex will read all files in downloads and depending on how many and large the mod archives are this can take many minutes. Since disk will likely be maxed out you can't install any mods until process finished. A second process will contact Nexus for all mod archive, trying to find the correct mod on Nexus and if successful more information is added to Vortex. While Vortex is busy "talking" with Nexus, this can block Vortex from installing mods until finished.

If on the other hand you copies the Vortex settings, Vortex don't need to re-create any of the information and you can immediately install mods.
