InsaneInsomniac
so I thought I was having issues with adding new mods to my skyrim game, as all the old mods worked but the new ones I tried to add didn'tnow, for several reasons, mainly being having crap internet, I like to keep the data of my mod intended games in my steamapps folder as a clean file and I make a copy to run the mods onas for launching the game, I set up a custom config in the vortex tools for skse and launch it there, which ensures it launches my copy and not the steamapps versionnow the first time I modded skyrim it properly modded my copy...and I confirmed this in the files...after some digging it turned out that vortex, for reasons unknown, decided to say f*** where you want me to put this stuff I'm shoving it all on the clean vanilla copy you like to keep in steamapps which resulted in me launching the game that hadn't updated since vortex switched locations, initially leaving me thinking the mods just weren't applying...now that I more or less know what went wrong, is there some way to prevent the file path for skyrim (or any other game I decide to mod later on) from resetting so that doesn't happen again? if it makes a difference I'm pretty sure I'm running vortex version 0.18.9 since it's not an issue with the mods themselves or with running the game I don't think I need to put in a modlist or my pc specs here...correct me if I'm wrong though
HadToRegister
All you need to do is use PROFILES in Vortex, so you can have as many unique setups as you want.
InsaneInsomniac
it's not that I wanted a separate set of mods installed for a different save/user, which is what it sounds like the profiles are for.I had a functional set of mods to test I was setting everything up right, then I wanted to add more mods to the set without changing install location but vortex reset to the default (steamapps) filepath on its own.I never touched profiles (and probably wont ever need them given I am the only user of my pc and don't play multiple modded saves at the same time). Vortex uses HardLinks, so technically there's NOTHING going in your Data folder. Just mod your game the normal way, then if you want your DATA directory clean of mods, just hit PURGE and your DATA directory will look like there were never any mods in there. InsaneInsomniac
knew *most* of that already...but I still see no explanation about or solution for the MAIN ISSUE I posted this for, which was vortex spontaneously forgetting/resetting which file path it was supposed to be using

Where was your Mod Staging Folder before Vortex "spontaneously" changed the file path? Where did Vortex reset the file path? When you installed Vortex, did you use the default installer or the custom installer? Can you provide more detail about your "custom" SKSE configuration in Vortex tools? How exactly is SKSE configured?

You're hand copying folders and files, and changing the path in Vortex, but when you fire up Vortex again, it goes by the Registry. As I said, you're doing stuff the hard way.You want to keep that extra install, then you need to alter the path of your copied install to your REGISTRY. YOu can't blame Vortex for trying to play by the rules you're breaking in order to keep your DATA directory clean. As I said, it would be easier for you to use the original game install, and just use Purge, when you want to play clean.
Guest deleted34304850
i'm not seeing what the vortex problem is here.i do see a user performing a unique series of actions, that don't really make sense to me, but seem to work for the user, but i don't see a specific vortex issue.if you want to maintain your unique method of modding your game, then you're probably best trying to do that with another mod manager, because all i can see is you having a lot of heartache trying to bend vortex to this unique method you've developed.
