Strange mod "__vortex_staging_folder"

Hi.

I recently had to uninstall and reinstall steam and skyrim to a new folder on my pc (c:games/steam) from c: program files/steam. I saved all my downloaded mods, and then moved them back to C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\skyrimse\mods. Vortex sees them fine and is able to install mods without complaining.

One thing that is "new" is this mod "__vortex_staging_folder" - can I delete this? What is it?

Thanks! :)

It is not a bug, but it should not be happening.

It should not show up in your mod list on the Vortex Mods page.

You can either hope Tannin sees this and comments, or do what I would do:

Open a bug report (Top right three dots on Vortex) and describe your situation.

You will get a comment appropriate to your situation.

It's not a mod, and don't delete it. It's a file Vortex put there to mark the folder as your mod staging folder.

Good to know! I'll leave it alone. Annoying that's in my mod list though.

Does it show up on your mods page? If so, then rmm200 is right - you need to report it. I simply assumed (wrongly, it appears) that you were talking about the files in your mods staging folder. There should be such a file there - that's not a bug. But something is amiss if that file also shows up on your Vortex mods page.

Sounds like you have your DOWNLOAD folder inside your STAGING folder, or Vice Versa

Also, you have it set up this way,

C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\skyrimse\mods

When you should have it set up this way

C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\mods\skyrimse\

C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\mods\fallout3

etc

Well HadToRegister, you'll have to report this as a bug, since Vortex default behaviour is to use {USERDATA}\{GAME}\mods for all games, and this gets expanded to

C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\skyrimse\mods

C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\skyrim\mods

C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\witcher2\mods

C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\witcher3\mods

etc.

This way everything except for downloads is kept in it's own game-specific sub-directory, meaning example under

C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\skyrimse you have the custom LOOT-rules you've created, a sub-directory with the LOOT master-list for this game, a sub-directory with the various Profiles for this game and a sub-directory with all the mods for this game.

Now granted the example showing how to specify directory on a different partition is different, but in this case you'll only have the mods-directory and not the other files and directories you can have per game under %appdata%, and having a common "main" directory with separate game-specific sub-directories does make sense.

All I did when I first installed Vortex was to make a MODS directory, and a DOWNLOADS directory.

Vortex, then proceeded to add the game specific sub-directories when I added the game to be managed by Vortex.

IE I created

D:\Vortex Mods\

and

D:\Vortex Downloads\

Then as I added games to be managed, Vortex, on it's own, added the sub-directories accordingly.

D:\Vortex Mods\skyrimse

D:\Vortex Mods\fallout3

D:\Vortex Mods\oblivion

When I started downloading mods for each game, the same thing happened

D:\Vortex Downloads\skyrimse

D:\Vortex Downloads\fallout3

D:\Vortex Downloads\oblivion

However, what's important is, I'm trying to determine whether the OP accidentally put his Mod Staging folder INSIDE his Download Folder or vice-versa, or if this is a 'hands off' install.
