earthdude
Hi, I'm not sure when it started on my lightly(?) modded game (80-100 mods), but saves take on the order of 20 or more seconds to complete. I searched the internet and found the following possible solutions:1. change settings in XPMSE in MCM; XPMSE has been associated with slow saves.2. scan the save with Resave (Fallrim Tools) to eliminate bad script pointers.3. Close mod manager. Results of doing the above:1. Changing XPMSE settings did nothing.2. Scanning/cleaning with Resave did nothing.3. Closing Vortex while playing... saves now take 2 or so seconds. Why would Vortex slow saves down? Is there a setting in Vortex that can affect this? Thanks,Earthdude
rmm200
Closing Vortex frees up memory. No direct effect on saves, but gives the game a little more room to work with.Check size of your save files. If they are much over 20M, you have save game bloat, and have to back up to a save before they started growing. No cure for a bloated save. Most common problem is too many saves. If you have more than 20 or so, delete a bunch and / or move them somewhere the game can't see them.
earthdude
Hi, thanks for your reply. To follow up:-My save files, including the SKSE co-save, are on the order of 10MB.-I deleted a bunch of old saves down to 10 retained saves. There was no change in save time. (I have experienced improvements in other games when doing this.)-Closing Vortex is the only thing that makes a difference. It seems odd that Vortex uses so much memory that it affects save time since I've run Vortex concurrent with FONV and FO4 and never had a problem. Tannin42
Thank you H2R. yes, please try that.Vortex memory usage shouldn't affect the game at all, since the game is in the foreground it will just take over all memory Vortex had allocated until Vortex is almost completely swapped out to disk. Going back to Vortex may be slow if you were low on memory but nothing inside the game should be affected.
earthdude
Hi, Yes, I tried changing Settings>Workarounds>MonitorSavegameDirectoryForChanges to OFF. And, it worked! If you don't mind explaining why this would be the case? What is actually going on during Savegame directory monitoring? Thanks!
Tannin42
Thanks for getting back to us, this will help us solve the slowdown. What Vortex does is monitor the directory holding the savegames so that it can update its own savegame list when new savegames are added or deleted. While Vortex is in the background it's not supposed to do anything though. When a savegame gets created Vortex should only set a flag to remind itself that there are new savegames that need to be read. Even if, Vortex parsing the savegame should be a matter of milliseconds. I can't really explain why Vortex monitoring the directory would affect the save times so badly. Maybe the fact that Vortex gets notified at all trips the game somehow. Or maybe the Antivirus locks the file before Vortex can read it until it's been scanned whereas if the file wasn't read the scan would happen in the background, not stalling the game. But even then, why does it take 20 seconds?
