shok13
ok, when i was using nmm i used an external to house my downloaded mods (cause i frequently had to switch between 2 pcs and didnt want to spend forever redownloading every mod i already had twice when stuff updated) and id have a folder for each game and it installed to the games directory all nice and neatly and if files didnt change i didnt need the external at all now with vortex it seems im forced to have just one big dump download folder, a stage folder, a mod folder, and nothing gets put into the actual game folder? how the hell does any of this work, what exactly do i need on the pc, what can i offload to an external and how do i separate all the mods ive got from nmm (cant import them cause i uninstalled nmm like a moron to switch to this) into game folders vortex can see (i REALLY dont wanna dump like 500 files over 5 games into a single folder and just hope vortex can tell the difference)

There's an NMM Download Folder, there's an NMM VIRTUAL INSTALL folder (Staging Folder)There's a Vortex Download Folder, and there's a Vortex Mod Staging Folder...SAME THING AS NMM My Download folder in Vortex is like this, I let Vortex set it up, after I specified the Download folder. D:\Vortex Downloads\skyrimseD:\Vortex Downloads\fallout4D:\Vortex Downloads\fallout3D:\Vortex Downloads\falloutnewvegasD:\Vortex Downloads\enderal My Mod Staging Folder in Vortex is like this D:\Vortex Mods\skyrimseD:\Vortex Mods\fallout4D:\Vortex Mods\fallout3D:\Vortex Mods\falloutnewvegasD:\Vortex Mods\enderal Your DOWNLOAD Folder in NMM and Vortex, is where the ARCHIVE of the Mod you downloaded from the Nexus is stored.Your MOD STAGING FOLDER (Vortex) or VIRTUAL INSTALL FOLDER (NMM) is where the ARCHIVE from the DOWNLOAD Folder is extracted, and virtually set up, then NMM and Vortex, make Hard Links, from the Virtual Install folder, or Mod Staging Folder, to your game DATA folder. All you had to do was copy your Mod Archives from your NMM Download folder to your Vortex Download Folder individual game sub-directories.
shok13
ok, then they need to add a tooltip in the downloads section that lets you know that the path in the program is per game OR that the path is a pointer and each game will have its own folder made by the program, because i set it to fallout 4 (my folder not the game dir), then switched to new vegas and the path was still set to fallout 4, leading me to believe that the program only allowed one folder to be selected for all downloads and everything would be dumped to that folder in a heap (nmm has you set each games folders individually and when you switch games it changes the path in settings or tells you to set a path) another thing they could do to make the transition easier is to add a bit to the tooltips that say something like "similar to the virtual install path in nmm" so that up front i know what the new names are supposed to represent and can just copy my paths directly from the settings i had for nmm, if youre going to change names but keep the same functionality dont make me search through multiple faqs for a longwinded explanation that could be covered with simply [on NMM: virtual install] has nothing to do with nmm is better, just the documentation for vortex needs to be much clearer for those coming out of many years of dealing with what nmm calls things

DOWNLOADS FOLDER, PER GAMEOnce I set the Downloads folder, Vortex adds the game sub-directory to it, such as D:\Games\Vortex Downloads\skyrimse If your Download Folder stayed "Fallout 4" even when you switched to Fallout New Vegas, then you must've set your Download Folder as "C:\Downloads\Fallout4" for every game MOD STAGING FOLDER, PER GAME

If you think these tips need improvement, then forward your suggestions to the developers via the Vortex feedback channel. (Speaking for myself, the current tips adequately inform me how to set up my download and mods folders properly.)
