vortex reinstall EVERY time pc is powered up

I used NMM for a long time, until I was basically forced into upgrading.

I have had no issues aside from the long list of mods it tells me will crash my skyrim (I have had 8 CTD in 4 months, 5 of those were due to Rochester mod, 3 were a bad mine/cave interior HD mod)

for some reason after I upgraded to version 1.0... EVERY time I load vertex it tells me I have version .96 and if I continue to run I will break the universe

So, I have to reinstall vortex EVERY time I power up my PC.

Not a huge deal, takes like 10 seconds. Just figured I would mention this.

This is the claim from every NMM user, however, if any of you scrolled down the Vortex Download page, you would've seen this

If I could see how to upload a screenshot I would do so.

I got the version error wrong. so, obviously I made the whole thing up?

This is the new box I get. (last update where it says YES I'm mad now, it said something about YES, I'll risk breaking the universe)

the version of Vortex you're running (0.19.1) is older than the one you previously ran (1.0.3)

while vortex versions are backward compatible they are not forward compatible. it's possible

this version of vortex may not run and may even do irreversable damage to your application

state.

Only continue if you're happy to reinstall and cleanup everything manually.

Quit YES, I'm mad

I obviously installed vortex from the web page originally. Now every time there is an update, I click the box to auto update.

I have tried going to the vortex page and installing it manually with every update.

But, every time I boot up my PC after I power down I get this error after 1.0.? came out.

I can close vortex and reopen, I can reboot and its fine. ONLY after a PC shut down. I work 60 hours per week, and sometimes

I only get to play a game once every couple of weeks.

I am legitimately asking a question, and for help.

You don't need to be a dick and condescending about it.

(maybe I misread or misinterpreted what you meant with your comments, but that is how you came across)

I'm not being a dick or condescending, I explained to you that your original post was missing information we need to help you and if you had posted the proper error message you would have gotten the solution 7 days ago and I would have only had to post once.

You have two versions of Vortex installed. One is version 0.19.1 and you installed it through the "(custom install location)" installer. The one that says "Use only if you know what you're doing."

At some point you must have removed the Vortex registry key or you reinstalled Windows or ran a snake oil tool like ccleaner which went and removed it.

Either way, an important registry key got removed (and no, it was certainly not Vortex itself) and now the Vortex installer doesn't know where your custom installation is so when you now update it installs to the default location in c:\program files. That version is 1.0.3.

So now every time you start your custom installed 0.19.1 it rightfully states there is an update and installs it. The error message is also to be taken at face value: You shouldn't run 0.19.1 after you ran 1.0.3.

The solution is to manually download and install the "custom install location" installer again so that registry key gets restored.

Or, even better, uninstall the custom install location variant and just use the default.

  • 6 months later...

observation: in the age of communications, the one weakness in the system is HUMANS. whether transmissions are garbled or receivers are set to strict linguistic codes, it is the propensity of most semi-sentient primates to choose PISSY over PATIENT. "Never attribute to malice that which can be attributed to ignorance." And on this rock, we are all ignorant. so let's play nice.
