Using Vortex and NMM

I want to start a new game (Skyrim SE) and found out one of the mods I want doesn't support NMM. So I have to use a different mod manager, like Vortex.

I'm also in the midst of playing a moderately modded version of Skyrim LE. I'm almost at level 50 and don't want to lose my progress.

My question is: Would I still be able to continue the game I'm playing using NMM *and* set up a new game using Vortex?

Switching mod managers in the middle of a developed game is a risky business, whether that manager be Vortex or not. Therefore, in answer to your question, I would say,"probably not." Although it can be done, it requires great care and effort. If you want to make that switch anyway, I would strongly encourage you to study the Vortex Knowledge Base before doing so.

Out of curiosity, what mods don't "support NMM" ( I guess by that you mean "are incompatible with NMM")?

Just to clarify, I don't want to switch the game I'm already playing (Skyrim LE) to Vortex. I want to keep that one as is, and start a brand new game of Skyrim SE using Vortex.

The mod in question is Legacy of the Dragonborn V.5/Oddessy of the Dragonborn. Both still in development. The mod author said that the would no longer be compatible with NMM.

also how many mods are you using with NMM?

Just for Skyrim? Give or take, 100-115. I don't have an exact number because it's been doing this weird thing where the mods will be grayed out or have a red "no" symbol, but will still be present in my game, or they'll be active with the green check and not be present in my game. Sometimes I outright delete them and they'll still be in my game. lol. No idea why.

I also have some for Oblivion. 29 to be exact. And I forgot I did start up a game of Skyrim SE awhile back. I have 26 mods there.

I suppose the reason why it "wouldn't be compatible" with NMM would be the file size. NMM struggles to install large mods and freezes.

That being said, you could just install the mod manually when the update comes around.

In a nutshell: it's not that using the mod with NMM will cause issues, it's that it likely won't even install via NMM due to file size, but you'll be fine installing it manually. Of course, you would then have to keep track of the installed files manually as well.

Switching over to Vortex during a lvl 50 playthrough with many mods that work well together is not recommended. Best save that for when you start a new playthrough.

This will work fine, as they are separate games.

Using different mod managers for different games shouldn't be a problem, at least as long as you exit one mod manager before starting the next.

The only small problem you'll maybe have is, it's a possibility Vortex will be registered for handling Nexus download-links even for games not currently active in Vortex, but if this is the case where should be an option to re-register another mod manager for handling Nexus download-links.
