Fallout 4 Keeps Crashing at Random Periods of Time

Thank you for responding StormWolf! The helpful input is greatly appreciated. It seems as if the CTDs occur because of the location mod conflicts (and side note: drastically increase when using F4SE). I'll see if any of the map expansions have any compatibility issues; but, so far Vortex has not notified me. I could also re-check to see if there is any fixes or updates that could be downloaded for the aforementioned mods.

As far as your question about my LO goes: I began a new game without any mods installed, and loaded my world in the Sanctuary Basement (with SMU). I hardsaved, then installed all of the larger mods I planned on using that might cause issues if I downloaded them in an exterior position. Another thing to note is that, with my load order, starting a new game is almost impossible (constant CTDs), and I usually have to revert to an old save (the basement in this case) for it to work.

Thank you for your patience :)

Heyas Sam. No problem!

Glad to help out whenever I can. I had a couple of other things pop into mind for you to check out. I really do apologize, I'm past due and having a hard time keeping my eyes open. So I haven't looked over your LO again. But you might want to post an update to that, once you have a chance.

I was thinking back to what we were talking about with your loading times, and it crashing there.

but before I get into that. You said that some of your other savegames aren't working. That's not good news :(

It most likely means that the problems that you're having is baked into the ones that aren't working. So they're probly toast :(

In which case, I recommend making backups of the ones that you do have, that are working.

I'd also recommend downloading a couple of clean saves that folks have uploaded to the mod section for you to use for your testing, until we can get your crashing sorted out.

Ok, so back to your cells. Also take a look to see if you've got mods that change interior EFFECTS. LIGHTING, in ANY form. Interior FOG. Stuff like that. If you've got them, check to see if they're using alterations of vanilla assets other than textures/meshes or .ini settings.

(speaking of which, you set up your .ini files for modding, right?) If they've made alterations to the records for the lighting, fog, other interior conditions, the settings in the .esm/esl/esp files could be conflicting with those worldspace additons.

One last thing, before I crash out. Are you using the file version checker bypass? https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/42497

If not, I would recommend doing so. ;)

hrm. Thats interesting about f4se. How about you go ahead and either take a screenshot of your f4se mods in your f4se folder in your data directory. Either screenshot the open folder, or take a pic of it with your phone. I wouldnt recommend trying to attach the pic here in the post, because of the forum limitations of file sizes.

I use imgbox, but there's tons of other sites that you can host pics to. Heck, if you have an android phone, you can use your google account. ;)

I'll check back in after I get in some shut-eye.

-Storm

Hey! It seems like Fallout 4 is now exclusively crashing when I die and load a save, or occasionally when I load a save from the menu. I was also wrong about my F4SE claim: the only mods I have installed that require it are PE and XDI, which have never caused issues for me in the past. Right now, I am taking your advice and backing up the "clean" saves and constantly keeping a report on when and where my game crashes. If anything interesting comes up, I'll let you know; but for now, Fallout 4 seems to be working fine...

PS: The graphical mod I have installed that I believe change interior effects is the Enhanced Lights and FX, however, that is another mod which has given me no problems in the past. My guess is that it could have a bad reaction with the various interior mods I have installed.

Sam, well that's definitely some steps in the right direction. So that's really good news!

As for it still crashing tho when you die, or try to load from a save. That's still concerning. I'm not sure if it's due to your load order, or from issues with the saves themselves. Especially if you've been removing active mods. Which, can result in corrupted saves.

If you want to put it to the test, go ahead and download and run a test save from a clean save from the downloads section, run it with your current load order, and then do a save. Load that save. Self expedite. Then see if there's a problem.

If you want a fast way to take yourself out, open up the console, and paste this into your game with Ctrl + V keys then hit enter.

player.additem 000E5750 3

which will add 3 nukagrenades to your inventory, and should allow you to finish yourself off rather quickly.

Ok, so I'm gonna have to ask for a second opinion on this one. For the Enhanced Lights and FX - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/13596?tab=files

It's only got one mesh file that it alters. (tho yeah, sometimes one is literally all it takes)

But it's got a truckload of texture files that it changes.

Can that cause issues with the mods that create additonal interiors? Especially if those interiors (might very possibly) have their own interior atmosphere effects?

LOL yeah, I know what you mean. I've been running a mod called The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly for well over a year now, and never had any problems. As soon as I installed a mod that altered some textures... the two did NOT mix well. I now have a huge red cloud that fills my screen under certain conditions, that CRIPPLES my FPS. Like so much lag that I have to wait 10+ seconds just for my pipboy to open up, and then wait again for each and every action I do, so that I can unequip the item that activates the TGTBTU.

It's almost faster to just close the game, deactivate the mod, and start back in again.

But anyways, this is good news. Hopefully it's something that will stay working! :)

Update: Currently, instant CTDs occur when I try to load my new saves. So I loaded a really old save inside of the Sanctuary root cellar (where I initially started). It seems to be working fine, I'll let you know if anything pops up.

Windows 10 or Windows 10 Pro, cause all the problems. if you can buy a Windows 8.1 install it.

Ugh. Bite your tongue. :) I run 10 pro and have no issues. Windows 8.1 was one of the worst O/S that MS ever released. If I wanted a tablet operating system, I would have bought a..... wait for it....... TABLET.
