Serialized StarTrek

I think both approaches have their merits and demerits. The serialized approach draws you more in to the world presented in the series, but can become monotonous and overly dire at times.

 

The seemingly haphazard and disjointed plotlines of the previous series allowed for better character development as it allowed more facets of the personality to be displayed; but it also made for some episodes that are better left forgotten.

 

What do you think?

Enterprise = garbage unworthy of the name.

 

Therefore the old style is better since it is all that is left. Sure, it might have some episodes better left forgotten, but that's better than Enterprise, where the entire series is better off forgotten!

I prefer the old stuff. I can't stand Enterprise, the way they do it sucks. TNG/DS9/TOS all the way. (pffft - voyager sucked)

I agree with the other posters. But I'm not that those episodes best forgotten don't have a certain period charm. They make me fall about with laughter, too!

Personally I liked the Voyager/DS9 series, hated TOS and the first 2 seasons of TNG. I've really liked the latest series. IMO I think serialised is definately at least as good, if not better, than "notable occurances". ;)

Voyager was the only Star Trek I could stay and watch without falling asleep or dieing of Trekination. It was just less...Trekky?

Personally, I have not seen much of TOS, aside from the movies. It is supposed to come out on DVD and when it does I'll buy it.

 

I have all seven seasons of TNG on DVD as well as 6 seasons of DS9 and I have 2 of 6 seasons of Voyager. In addition I have all the movies. But I do not consider myself a hard core Trekkie. I enjoy the series and the world Roddenberry created. However I do not like this new Enterprise series as much. It is simply too depressing. Where are the light hearted antics that were the staple of every previous series? Heck, even Picard managed to joke about his Borg experience.

 

I will say this for Enterprise however. Like it or not, watching the serialized version of a program, you are more likely to “tune in next week” to see what happens. The obvious downside is that if you begin to watch the program in the middle of the series (as did I) your lost. Why are there 31 varieties of Xindi? Just how far from Earth are they?

IMO, the style and overall idea of Enterprise is good, but I don't like it for one reason - it seems to depart from the established Trek timeline in various places, (such as the entire existence of the USS Enterprise NX-01) and it seems pretty clear to me that the only way they can explain this is, when they finally wind it up, they are going to use the background 'time-travel war' theme to basically say that the whole series never happened, so what's the point?

 

IMO, they should have done essentially the same thing, but just name the ship differently, or even have it set on a ship already mentioned in the other series, such as the USS Daedalus, which is supposed to be a precursor to the Constitution class starships (the type the Enterprise was in the original series, for all you non-trekkies).
